Chapter 9 - The Gallery of Dreams

That evening, a private celebration was held at the Drummond estate.

The grand gallery in the west wing—a hall that had once stood dark and locked for eighteen years—was lit by hundreds of warm candles and filled with music.

Hanging along the high marble walls were thirty magnificent oil paintings created by Eleanor over the past two years.

The central piece of the exhibition was a massive, six-foot canvas that drew every guest into silent awe.

It depicted a rainy, misty morning on a marble porch. A little girl with tangled hair and mismatched shoes stood in the grey light, holding a cardboard box lined with a blue blanket. Standing in the open doorway was a tall man, his face illuminated by a sudden, golden light breaking through the clouds behind him.

The title of the painting was inscribed on a silver plate at the bottom:

The Moment We Came Home.

Sophia stood before the canvas, holding a glass of sparkling apple cider, staring up at her own likeness on the wall.

Edward walked up behind her, setting his hand gently on her shoulder.

“Do you like it?” Edward asked softly.

“It looks like a fairytale,” Sophia said, leaning back against his side. “Except it’s real.”

“It is real,” Edward agreed. “Arthur finished filing the final legal adoption papers this afternoon, Sophia.”

Sophia turned her head quickly, looking up into his face. “The papers?”

Edward reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a leather-bound certificate stamped with the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

“You are officially my daughter, Sophia,” Edward said, his voice thick with unshakeable pride. “Sophia Miller Drummond. Legally, completely, and forever.”

Sophia stared at the document, then looked up at Edward’s icy blue eyes—eyes that were no longer cold, but filled with a father’s unyielding love.

She threw her arms around his waist, burying her face into his coat. “Thank you, Dad.”

Edward wrapped his arms tight around her, resting his chin on her hair, holding his daughter close as the music filled the grand gallery.
