CHAPTER 3 – THE WAR INSIDE HARTWELL INDUSTRIES

The morning Emily Hart walked into Hartwell Industries, the entire building went silent.

Not because anyone knew what had happened.

Not yet.

Not because they knew their CEO’s daughter had discovered her husband’s betrayal.

Not because they knew a war was coming.

They went silent because Emily looked different.

For years, people at Hartwell Industries had known Emily as Richard Hart’s daughter.

The kind daughter.

The quiet daughter.

The woman who smiled at every employee and remembered every birthday.

The woman who avoided confrontation.

The woman who apologized even when she was right.

But that woman was gone.

The woman who stepped through the glass doors that morning wore a dark navy suit, her hair neatly tied back, her expression calm and unreadable.

In her arms was no briefcase.

No stack of documents.

Only confidence.

And beside her walked Charles Fenton.

The same lawyer who had protected the Hart family for twenty-five years.

Employees immediately noticed.

Something was happening.

Because Charles Fenton did not walk beside anyone.

He walked behind Richard Hart.

And now he was walking beside Emily.

The elevator doors closed.

Emily stared at her reflection in the mirrored wall.

She barely recognized herself.

A week ago, she was a new mother struggling to survive sleepless nights, wondering why her husband no longer looked at her the same way.

Now she was standing at the center of a corporate empire worth sixty-five million dollars.

And she finally understood why her father had spent years preparing her.

Not to run a company.

To survive people.

“Are you ready?” Charles asked.

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

He nodded.

“That’s honest.”

She took a deep breath.

“But I’m doing it anyway.”

The elevator reached the forty-second floor.

The doors opened.

Hartwell Industries.

Her father’s world.

Her inheritance.

Her battlefield.

The emergency board meeting had been scheduled without her permission.

That alone told Emily everything.

They were not inviting her.

They were testing her.

Inside the conference room sat eight members of the Hartwell board.

Most were older men who had worked with Richard Hart for decades.

Some looked uncomfortable.

Some looked curious.

And one person looked completely confident.

Mark Anderson.

He sat at the end of the table.

Not beside Emily.

Not as her husband.

As her opponent.

The sight of him almost broke her.

Almost.

Because a small part of her still remembered the man who held her hand under hospital lights.

The man who cried when Lily was born.

The man she thought she would grow old with.

But then she remembered the perfume.

The message.

The documents.

And the way he looked at Hartwell Industries before he looked at her.

Charles pulled out a chair.

“Mrs. Hart.”

Emily sat.

Mark watched her carefully.

He was trying to read her.

Trying to figure out what she knew.

She gave him nothing.

“Emily,” Mark said softly.

Everyone looked between them.

The husband and wife.

The family drama nobody expected.

She looked at him.

“Mr. Anderson.”

The change in how she addressed him was small.

But everyone noticed.

Mark’s smile faded.

“You don’t have to make this personal.”

Emily almost smiled.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“You’re the one who requested a board meeting to challenge my authority.”

Mark leaned forward.

“I requested a review.”

Charles opened a folder.

“Your filing specifically questions Mrs. Hart’s ability to control Hartwell Industries due to her recent personal circumstances.”

The room became tense.

Emily understood immediately.

He was using Lily.

Her exhaustion.

Her grief.

Her new motherhood.

Her emotions.

Everything he had used privately was now becoming a weapon publicly.

Mark spoke calmly.

“I’m concerned about the company.”

“No,” Emily said.

Everyone turned.

She looked directly at him.

“You’re concerned about control.”

Silence.

Mark’s expression hardened.

“Emily.”

“No.”

She placed a document on the table.

“You spent six months preparing this.”

Mark froze.

The board members looked confused.

Charles continued.

“Mr. Anderson submitted preliminary documents to acquire decision-making authority over Hartwell Industries before Richard Hart’s death.”

A board member frowned.

“Is that true?”

Mark immediately responded.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Emily watched him.

The speed of the lie.

The confidence.

The practice.

He had done this before.

Many times.

“I have emails.”

The room went silent.

Emily slid copies across the table.

“I have financial records.”

Another document.

“I have evidence of communication between Mr. Anderson and outside investors attempting to gain influence over this company.”

Mark’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You went through my private information?”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

She paused.

“You left evidence behind.”

The board members read quietly.

Minutes passed.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Robert Hayes, the oldest board member, removed his glasses.

“Mark.”

His voice was disappointed.

“Explain.”

Mark looked around.

For the first time, he was not controlling the room.

He was losing it.

“I can explain everything.”

Emily almost laughed.

Of course he could.

People like Mark always had explanations.

“I met Emily before I knew about her inheritance.”

One board member looked skeptical.

“Then why do these documents suggest otherwise?”

Mark looked at Charles.

Then Emily.

His eyes changed.

A warning.

A threat.

“Because someone manipulated information.”

Emily felt the shift.

He was no longer trying to defend himself.

He was looking for someone to blame.

“Who?” she asked.

Mark stared at her.

“You.”

The room went quiet.

Emily blinked.

“Me?”

“You knew I loved you.”

A strange feeling moved through her.

Anger.

Sadness.

Disbelief.

“You cheated on me.”

“You pushed me away.”

“I had a newborn daughter.”

“And I felt invisible.”

Emily stared at him.

For a second, she almost felt sorry.

Then she remembered.

He was not apologizing.

He was rewriting history.

“You don’t get to betray someone and call yourself the victim.”

After the meeting ended, Mark followed her into the hallway.

“Emily.”

She kept walking.

“Emily, stop.”

She turned.

“What?”

His voice lowered.

“You’re destroying everything.”

She looked at him.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You did.”

“You think you can run this company alone?”

Emily stared.

There it was.

The insult.

The assumption.

The belief that she was incapable.

Her father had spent years hearing the same thing.

Maybe that was why he had left her this challenge.

Not to prove she could manage a company.

To prove she could believe in herself.

“I was trained by Richard Hart.”

Mark laughed bitterly.

“Your father protected you.”

“No.”

Emily stepped closer.

“He prepared me.”

Mark’s face tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

Emily looked at him.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

Then she whispered:

“I’m removing you.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“Your position as vice president is suspended pending investigation.”

“You can’t.”

“I own the company.”

Mark stared.

For the first time, he realized something.

The woman standing in front of him was not asking permission anymore.

That evening, Emily returned home exhausted.

But she felt stronger.

Until she saw the envelope on the kitchen table.

No name.

No address.

Just a single sentence written on the front.

You don’t know the truth about your father.

Her heart stopped.

Slowly, she opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Her father.

Richard Hart.

Standing outside a hotel.

With someone Emily recognized.

Mark.

But the date was impossible.

The photograph was taken one year before Emily met him.

Her hands began shaking.

There was a note attached.

Your husband wasn’t the only person hiding something.

Emily stared.

Her father.

The man she trusted more than anyone.

The man who had protected her.

Had a secret too.

Before she could process it, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Emily Hart?”

“Yes?”

“You think Mark Anderson is your enemy.”

Emily froze.

“Who is this?”

The woman ignored the question.

“You’re wrong.”

A pause.

Then:

“Mark was only following orders.”

Emily’s blood ran cold.

“Whose orders?”

The woman whispered:

“Your father’s.”

The call ended.

Emily stood frozen in the kitchen.

Lily began crying upstairs.

But Emily could not move.

Because suddenly the world she knew had collapsed again.

Her husband had lied.

Her father had hidden something.

And somewhere between love and betrayal was a truth that could destroy everything.

The next morning, Charles arrived at Emily’s house earlier than expected.

He looked troubled.

“Emily.”

She showed him the photograph.

The moment Charles saw it, his face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You know this?”

Charles slowly sat down.

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

He looked at Lily’s crib.

Then back at Emily.

“There are things your father never wanted you to know.”

Emily’s voice was quiet.

“My entire life has been built on secrets.”

Charles sighed.

“Your father was investigating Mark.”

“I know.”

“But he was also investigating someone else.”

“Who?”

Charles looked at her.

“Someone inside Hartwell Industries.”

Emily felt a chill.

“Who?”

Charles hesitated.

Then he said the name.

A name that would change everything.

“Your uncle.”

Emily froze.

Her father’s younger brother.

The man who had attended the funeral.

The man who hugged her and told her he would always protect her.

The man who had been standing beside her family for decades.

“Thomas Hart?”

Charles nodded.

“Your father believed Thomas was connected to the people trying to take Hartwell Industries.”

Emily whispered:

“And Mark?”

Charles looked at her.

“Mark may not have been the beginning.”

A pause.

“He may have been the middle.”

Emily looked toward Lily.

Her daughter was sleeping peacefully.

Completely unaware of the war surrounding her.

Emily gently touched her tiny hand.

Then she stood.

“Find everything.”

Charles looked up.

“Emily.”

“Everything about Mark. Everything about Thomas. Everything my father hid.”

Her voice became stronger.

“I want the truth.”

Because she finally understood.

This was never just about a cheating husband.

It was never just about money.

It was about a family empire built on secrets.

May you like

And Emily Hart was about to uncover them all.
