Chapter 6 - The Confession

Three weeks before his trial was set to begin, Evan sent an urgent request through his public defender. He wanted to see me. No lawyers, no cameras—just me.

Naomi advised against it, but I agreed on one condition: the meeting would take place in the visitor room of the county correctional facility, with a two-way mirror and security officers present.

When the heavy steel door clicked open, Evan walked in.

He looked unmitigatedly broken. His hair was cropped short, his face was gaunt, and the orange jumpsuit hung loosely off his broad shoulders. He sat down across the bolted metal table, his hands trembling slightly in their plastic restraints.

He looked up at me, his blue eyes filled with a hollow, desperate pain.

"Clara," he rasped, his voice barely a whisper.

"Evan," I replied, sitting straight, my coat folded neatly over my lap.

"I didn't think you’d come," he said, staring at his knuckles. "Everyone left. My friends... Arthur... even my mother’s family won't take her phone calls from the women's facility."

"Actions have consequences, Evan."

"Why didn't you stop me?" he suddenly blurted out, a tear spilling over his pale cheek. "Years ago, Clara! When I first took that $50,000 bonus without board approval! You knew the accounts! You saw the books! Why did you let me keep going until I destroyed myself?"

I looked at him with profound sadness—not for the man he was, but for the man he could have been if his vanity hadn't eaten his soul.

"I loved you, Evan," I said quietly. "When you love someone, you trust them to have an internal compass. I thought you were just ambitious. I didn't realize you were hollow."

"I hated feeling small around your father’s memory!" Evan shouted softly, pressing his forehead against his chained hands. "Every time I walked into that boardroom, I saw his portrait! Everyone looked at me like I was just the lucky guy who married the heiress! I wanted to build an empire that was mine! I wanted to show everyone—you, your father, my mother—that I was the king!"

"You didn't build an empire, Evan," I said firmly. "You rented one with my family’s money, and then you tried to destroy me so you wouldn't have to pay the rent."

Evan let out a ragged, broken sob. "I lost everything. The money, the title, Kelsey... my mother is facing four years in prison. I’m facing ten. My life is over, Clara."

"Your life as a liar is over," I corrected him, standing up. "Now you have ten years to figure out who you are without my money."

I turned toward the steel door and signaled the guard.

"Clara!" Evan called out, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated regret. "Did you ever really love me?"

May you like

I stopped at the threshold, looking back over my shoulder one last time.

"I loved the man I thought you were," I said. "It’s a pity he never existed."
