CHAPTER 4 – THE WAR INSIDE THE VOSS EMPIRE

The message was still on the table when Adrian Voss arrived.
Not physically.
Not from somewhere outside.
He had been there the entire time.
Standing in the doorway.
Watching the ink dry.
Watching Mara Whitaker stare at the words that had changed everything.
STOP DIGGING, MARA.
OR YOUR DAUGHTER PAYS.
For years, Adrian had been surrounded by threats.
He had received envelopes containing photographs of people he loved.
He had found messages carved into his car.
He had woken up to the sound of footsteps outside his bedroom.
Threats were normal in his world.
They were currency.
But this was different.
Because the person threatening him had not threatened him.
They threatened Lily.
And that meant one thing.
Someone inside his family had crossed a line.
A line that could never be uncrossed.
Adrian slowly walked toward the table.
Mara did not move.
She looked frozen.
Not afraid.
Something worse.
A mother calculating how far she would go to protect her child.
Adrian knew that look.
Because he had seen it before.
In his own mother.
The night she died.
“What are we going to do?” Mara asked.
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Adrian looked at her.
“We leave.”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
He frowned.
“What?”
“We don’t run.”
“Mara—”
“No.”
She turned toward him.
“Every time someone powerful wants people like me to disappear, they count on fear.”
Her eyes were sharp.
“I spent three years watching people who were guilty destroy my life because they thought I was too small to fight back.”
She pointed at the message.
“I’m done running.”
Adrian stared at her.
A strange emotion moved through him.
Respect.
The woman terrified him.
Not because she was weak.
Because she wasn’t.
“You understand what you’re saying?”
“Yes.”
“You’re talking about fighting the Voss family.”
“I’m talking about finding the person who threatened my daughter.”
Adrian was silent.
Because there was a difference.
A big one.
Mara was not interested in revenge.
She was interested in justice.
And that made her more dangerous than anyone in his family.
Two hours later, they left Loon Ridge Lake.
The cabin disappeared behind them as the snow continued falling.
Mara sat in the passenger seat with Lily asleep in the back.
Adrian drove.
Neither spoke much.
But the silence between them was different now.
Before, it had been distrust.
Now it was something else.
A fragile understanding.
Mara looked out the window.
“You really believe my father was murdered.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian kept his eyes on the road.
“Because your father knew too much.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“The person who killed him also tried to kill me.”
Mara looked at him.
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“And you think it’s the same person?”
“I know.”
“How?”
Adrian was quiet.
Then he said:
“Because they used the same method.”
Mara waited.
“They tried to make it look like an accident.”
A chill moved through her.
“The lake.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“The SUV.”
“Yes.”
“So someone wanted you dead and wanted it to look like you simply lost control.”
“Yes.”
“And then they knew I would find you.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Exactly.”
Mara’s expression changed.
“They planned this.”
“Yes.”
The realization settled between them.
Someone had not discovered them.
Someone had created this moment.
Someone had pushed Adrian into that lake knowing Mara would be the one to find him.
The question was no longer:
Who attacked Adrian?
The question was:
Why did they choose Mara?
The Voss estate was not a home.
It was a fortress.
Mara had seen expensive houses before.
Hospital executives.
Surgeons.
Politicians.
But nothing prepared her for this.
The gates alone were larger than her entire cabin.
The property stretched across hundreds of acres.
Stone buildings.
Private security.
Cameras hidden everywhere.
It was beautiful.
And terrifying.
Lily pressed her face against the window.
“Wow.”
Mara smiled sadly.
“Remember what Mommy says.”
“What?”
“Big houses don’t always mean happy people.”
Lily nodded seriously.
Adrian heard.
A small smile appeared.
“She’s right.”
Mara glanced at him.
“You agree?”
“I learned that lesson young.”
Inside the estate, the war had already begun.
The moment Adrian entered the main hall, everyone stopped.
Men in expensive suits.
Women wearing designer clothing.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Family members.
All watching.
Waiting.
Adrian walked forward.
Mara noticed something.
Nobody looked surprised to see him.
They looked afraid.
That told her everything.
A woman approached.
Older.
Elegant.
Silver hair.
Cold eyes.
“Adrian.”
He stopped.
“Mother.”
Mara froze.
His mother.
The woman looked at Mara.
Then Lily.
Then back to Adrian.
“You brought them here?”
“Yes.”
“You have lost your mind.”
Mara stepped forward.
“Excuse me?”
The woman ignored her.
“This family has survived because we control information.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“And now you bring a stranger into the center of it.”
Adrian’s voice became cold.
“She is not a stranger.”
The woman looked at him.
That sentence mattered.
A lot.
“Be careful, Adrian.”
“About what?”
“About confusing gratitude with loyalty.”
The words landed harder than Mara expected.
Because they revealed something.
Even Adrian’s own family did not trust him.
That evening, Mara learned the truth about the Voss empire.
Not from Adrian.
From his enemies.
His family.
The Voss empire had been built by Adrian’s grandfather.
A businessman.
A genius.
A ruthless man.
He created companies across the world.
But he also created a hidden network.
A system of control.
People owed him favors.
Politicians owed him protection.
Competitors disappeared.
The official world saw success.
The hidden world saw power.
Adrian’s father continued that legacy.
And Adrian hated him for it.
Because Adrian’s father believed one thing:
Power mattered more than people.
Adrian believed the opposite.
That was why they fought.
That was why Adrian’s father tried to destroy him.
And that was why Mara’s father became involved.
“He wanted to expose everything.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
“Your father.”
“Yes.”
“Your own father.”
“Yes.”
“And you were going to let him?”
Adrian looked at the floor.
“I was nineteen.”
“That’s not an excuse.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“It’s the truth.”
Mara saw something she had not expected.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I spent years thinking I could fix my family.”
Adrian’s voice became quiet.
“I thought if I became powerful enough, I could change the system from inside.”
“And?”
“I failed.”
The honesty hurt.
Because Mara understood failure.
She had tried to do the right thing.
And still lost everything.
That night, the first betrayal was revealed.
A security alarm sounded.
Everyone rushed into the control room.
A file had been stolen.
Not money.
Not weapons.
A file.
Adrian looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?”
Mara asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian?”
Finally:
“It’s your father’s investigation.”
Mara felt her heart stop.
“My father’s file?”
“Yes.”
“Someone stole it?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
The security officer hesitated.
Adrian looked at him.
“Say it.”
The officer swallowed.
“It came from inside the estate.”
Silence.
The entire room changed.
Because everyone understood.
The enemy was not outside.
It was already inside.
Adrian looked around the room.
At his family.
At the people he had known his entire life.
Then his eyes stopped.
On one person.
Alexander.
His brother stood near the doorway.
Calm.
Almost amused.
Adrian’s voice became dangerous.
“You.”
Alexander smiled.
“Careful.”
“Where is the file?”
“I don’t have it.”
“Then why was it accessed using your security code?”
A silence.
Then Alexander laughed.
“You really think I’m the only person who knows my own code?”
Adrian stepped closer.
“You threatened Mara.”
“No.”
Alexander looked at Mara.
“I warned her.”
Mara felt anger rise.
“You threatened my daughter.”
Alexander’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked serious.
“I would never hurt a child.”
“Then why write that message?”
“Because someone else wanted you scared.”
Adrian stared.
“Who?”
Alexander looked around the room.
Then said:
“The person standing beside you.”
Everyone turned.
Toward Mara.
Her blood ran cold.
“What?”
Alexander smiled.
“Ask her why your father left her the key.”
Adrian looked at Mara.
A question appeared in his eyes.
Not suspicion.
Confusion.
Mara stepped back.
“The key?”
Everyone was silent.
Then Adrian remembered.
The silver key.
The one from her father’s box.
Slowly, Mara reached into her pocket.
She had carried it with her.
She placed it on the table.
Alexander looked at it.
And smiled.
“Exactly.”
Adrian stared.
“What does it open?”
Alexander’s smile disappeared.
“Something your father spent twenty years hiding.”
“What?”
Alexander looked at Mara.
“The truth about why your father chose you.”
The room became silent.
Then every light went out.
Darkness swallowed the estate.
A gunshot echoed.
Lily screamed.
And when emergency lights turned on…
The silver key was gone.
Adrian moved instantly.
He grabbed Mara and Lily.
Protected them with his body.
The entire estate erupted into chaos.
Security rushed through halls.
Doors locked.
People shouted.
But Adrian heard only one thing.
Mara’s breathing.
Lily crying.
They were alive.
That was all that mattered.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Adrian answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“You wanted a war.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Who is this?”
A laugh.
“You know exactly who this is.”
The voice continued:
“Your father built the empire.”
A pause.
“Your brother inherited the ambition.”
Another pause.
“But Mara Whitaker…”
The voice became colder.
“She inherited the weapon.”
The call ended.
Adrian looked at Mara.
And for the first time in years…
He was afraid.
Because he realized something.
May you like
The person hunting them did not want Adrian dead.
They wanted Mara alive.
