Chapter 8 - The Desert Truth

Before Vane could react, Marcus triggered the tactical radio in his pocket. A loud, high-frequency pulse blared through every radio frequency on the street, overloading the communications headsets of every Aegis operative simultaneously.

The guards screamed in pain, clutching their ears as the screeching feedback paralyzed them.

Marcus moved like a phantom. He tackled the two guards nearest to Vane, disarming them before they could recover from the acoustic shock.

Maya threw the station wagon into reverse, executing a J-turn through the grass, slamming the rear of the car into the second SUV's radiator grid, causing its airbags to deploy instantly, trapping the driver inside.

"Marcus! Get in!" Maya screamed, swinging the passenger door open.

Marcus grabbed Director Vane by her lapels, dragging her toward the open door, sliding her onto the floorboard before jumping into the front seat.

"Drive!" Marcus ordered.

The station wagon accelerated out of Cypress Avenue, leaving the remaining disoriented contractors behind in the burning wreckage of their own vehicles.

Inside the bouncing vehicle, Director Vane lay pinned under Marcus’s heavy boot, her face pale with fury.

"You're dead, Vance," Vane spat, blood trickling from her nose. "Aegis has servers in three countries. Even if you have Arthur's drive, you can't stop the corporation."

"We don't need to stop the whole corporation, Vane," Marcus said, pulling the hard drive from the metal briefcase. "We just need to broadcast this specific file to the Department of Justice, the EPA, and every major news network in the nation using the military satellite array at the Fort Ord communications hub."

Vane’s eyes widened with genuine terror for the first time. "Fort Ord is a closed military site! You can't access the array without high-level clearance!"

Marcus held up the brass cylinder. "Arthur didn't just store environmental records on this drive, Vane. He stored the master encryption keys to Aegis’s entire military defense network—the keys you gave him when he was lead systems designer."

The car tore down the deserted highway leading out of Monterey, heading deep into the foggy hills of the abandoned Fort Ord military base.

An hour later, the station wagon broke through the rusted chain-link fence of the decommissioned facility. Massive satellite dishes loomed out of the darkness like ancient metal giants against the night sky.

Marcus dragged Vane out of the car, leading Maya and Willa toward the central command bunker. The heavy steel door was rusted, but Marcus used an iron crowbar from the trunk to force the locking pins, revealing a subterranean bunker preserved since the late 1990s.

"This is where it all started," Maya whispered, looking at the decaying consoles and green CRT monitors covered in dust.

"Arthur and I were stationed here in '98," Marcus said, flipping the main power breakers. Emergency yellow lights flickered to life, buzzing softly. "He built the emergency broadcast system for the western seaboard right in this room."

Marcus hooked the metal briefcase directly into the main terminal console. The green screens burst into lines of code as the internal drive began uploading data.

UPLOADING ENCRYPTED EVIDENCE FILE: PROJECT CYPRESS_CLEANUP. BROADCAST TARGET: FEDERAL JUDICIAL NETWORK / EPA MAIN FRAME / GLOBAL PRESS.

"It's going to take ten minutes to route through the satellite array," Marcus said, turning to face the entrance.

Outside, the heavy thrumming of helicopter blades began to shake the concrete bunker floor.
