Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Pact

In the weeks following the attack, the Vance estate became an impregnable castle.

Dominic launched an all-out economic and tactical war against the Moretti family. From his study, he directed syndicate operations that dismantled Moretti’s supply lines, seized his docks, and drove his top lieutenants into hiding. The underworld was bleeding, but inside the gates of the estate, a strange, beautiful sanctuary began to take root.

Nora no longer wore her cheap nanny clothes. At Dominic’s insistence, her wardrobe was replaced with comfortable, elegant clothes, though she still concealed a compact weapon beneath her sweaters.

She was no longer treated as staff. She ate every meal at the main table with Dominic. They spoke late into the night over glasses of aged scotch—not about the syndicate or war, but about books, history, philosophy, and the quiet dreams they had both buried long ago.

Dominic discovered that beneath her icy exterior lay a razor-sharp wit, a deep love for classical music, and a fierce, protective warmth that she only showed to Leo.

And Leo was thriving.

He was four months old now, laughing, rolling over on his play mat, his dark eyes tracking Nora whenever she moved across the room. He refused to go to sleep unless both Dominic and Nora came into the nursery to give him his evening check.

One rainy afternoon, Dominic walked into the sunroom—which had been fully restored with reinforced, bulletproof glass.

Nora was sitting on the rug with Leo, showing him a wooden baby rattle. The sun was breaking through the rain clouds, casting long, warm shafts of light across the hardwood floor.

Dominic sat down on the floor beside her, unbuttoning his suit jacket.

"Moretti’s bank accounts were frozen by federal authorities today," Dominic said softly. "His men are deserting him. By next week, he won't have enough money to buy a hand grenade, let alone attack this house again."

Nora looked at him, her gray eyes thoughtful. "So the threat is almost gone."

Dominic felt a sudden, sharp tightening in his chest. "Yes."

"Then my job here is nearly finished," she said quietly, looking down at the rattle in her hands.

Dominic reached out, taking the rattle from her fingers. He set it aside, then covered her hand with his own.

"Is that what this is to you, Eleonora?" he asked, his voice low, thick with an emotion he had sworn off since the day his wife walked out. "A job?"

Nora looked up, meeting his intense gaze. "I am a dead woman, Dominic. I have no legal name, no paper trail, no future. You are a syndicate leader. Your world is built on blood. If I stay..."

"If you stay," Dominic cut in fiercely, "you become the mother my son deserves. You become the woman who rules this house beside me. You think I care about your past? You think I care that Interpol thinks you're dead?"

He leaned in close, his dark eyes blazing with an undeniable, consuming truth.

"I have spent my whole life making men disappear, Nora," he whispered, his fingers weaving through hers. "I can make a new identity for you in twenty-four hours. A clean name. A clean past. A life where you never have to run from a war again."

Nora’s breath hitched. She looked at their joined hands, then at Leo, who was happily babbling on the rug, reaching out his small hands to grab Dominic’s pant leg.

"Why are you doing this, Dominic?" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly for the first time since she had walked into his house.

"Because four weeks ago, my life was a dark room full of screaming," Dominic said softly, reaching up with his other hand to gently frame her jawline, his thumb brushing across her soft cheekbone. "And you walked in, put your hand on my chest, and made the world make sense again."

Nora stared at him, her defenses crumbling, the cold, iron shell she had worn for years melting under the intensity of his love.

Before she could answer, the intercom on the wall chimed loudly.

Victor’s panicked voice spat through the speaker: "Boss! You need to come to the front gate immediately! It’s... it’s your wife. Helena is back."
