Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Citadel

Six months after the storm, the dark clouds had completely cleared.
My sprawling estate overlooking the river was no longer a place of quiet secrecy, but a haven of light and life. The flowers in the garden were blooming, and the sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my private study.
Brenda entered, carrying a hot cup of tea and a fresh stack of legal documents—this time, official invitations to speak at the National Association of Women Judges conference.
“The President’s office called this morning, Your Honor,” Brenda smiled warmly. “They are officially vetting you for the vacancy on the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.”
“One step at a time, Brenda,” I chuckled, sitting at my desk with Grace bouncing on my lap while Noah played happily with his wooden blocks on the plush rug beside me.
