Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Spring returned to Chicago with a brilliant explosion of green grass, blooming tulips, and warm, golden sunshine that chased away the last lingering memories of winter.
It had been nearly a year since the day Mark left our home with his hastily packed duffel bag.
Matthews Holdings had officially filed for bankruptcy protection three months prior, swallowed whole by federal fraud investigations and mounting civil liabilities. Diane had reportedly moved into a cramped, dismal condominium across state lines, her social standing reduced to bitter gossip among people who no longer remembered her name.
And us?
We were thriving.
On a bright Saturday morning in May, I sat on our back patio with a cup of coffee, watching Maya and Chloe chase our new golden retriever puppy across the sprawling green lawn, while Sophia helped push Elise in her stroller along the garden path.
The corporate world I had once abandoned to play the dutiful suburban wife felt like a lifetime ago. In fact, just last week, I had officially launched my own independent architectural and interior design consultancy, operating out of our newly renovated home office. My first major commercial contract was already signed, sealed, and underway.
My phone buzzed on the patio table.
It wasn't a lawyer, a bank notice, or an angry relative. It was an email from the local school district confirming Sophia’s enrollment in the advanced academic program for the upcoming fall semester.
