Chapter 9 - A Visit to Quiet Waters

A month after the gala, on a crisp, clear Sunday morning, June and I drove out to the peaceful countryside cemetery on the hillside overlooking the river valley.

It was the place where my wife, Rebecca, was buried.

The autumn leaves were a vibrant mosaic of red, gold, and amber, rustling gently in the cool breeze. We walked together down the quiet stone path, carrying a fresh bouquet of pale lavender roses—Rebecca’s favorite flowers.

We stopped at the clean, white marble headstone engraved with her name:

REBECCA VANCE

Beloved Wife and Mother — Her Light Endures

June knelt down on the soft grass, placing the lavender roses neatly at the base of the stone. She touched the cold marble gently, whispering a quiet prayer before standing up and slipping her arm through mine.

"She would be so proud of you, Dad," June said softly, leaning her head against my shoulder as we looked out over the sunlit valley below.

"She would be proud of you, bug," I replied, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. "Everything good that we built... started with her memory."

I pulled the sterling-silver pocket watch—my grandfather’s watch—out of my coat pocket. I opened the latch, listening to the soft, rhythmic, unyielding tick-tick-tick of the old mechanical gears working inside. Time had moved forward. The old wounds had healed, the debts of justice had been settled, and the rotten legacy of the past had dissolved into dust.

What remained was solid, real, and enduring.
