Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary Above the Clouds

The Dreamliner climbed effortlessly through thirty thousand feet, cruising far above the turbulent weather systems below. Out the wide window, an endless ocean of white clouds stretched toward the golden setting sun, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and rose.

Inside the cabin, complete peace reigned.

Lily had pulled her tray table down—not to shield herself from a bully, but to lay out a massive spread of watercolor paints provided by the flight crew. She was carefully painting a picture of a silver airplane flying through a rainbow, her small tongue sticking out slightly in intense concentration.

Grace leaned back in her plush leather seat, sipping a warm cup of herbal tea.

She pulled her leather bag from beneath the seat and reached inside.

Her hand brushed against the navy blue leather folder that had once held the power to bring down an entire corporate empire.

Slowly, Grace pulled the folder out.

She didn't unlatch the brass lock to check legal dossiers or safety violations. Instead, she unclasped it one last time, opening the inner pocket.

Inside, resting beneath her federal credentials, was a handwritten note on faded yellow lined paper—the very last letter David had written to her before he left for his final maintenance shift four years ago:

Grace,

If you're reading this, it means the storm has finally hit. I know you're scared, but remember who you are. You have a heart capable of fierce love, and a mind strong enough to move mountains.

Protect our little girl. Teach her that she never has to hide who she is from a noisy world. And when the sky finally clears, remember to look up and know that I am always flying beside you.

Forever yours, David

Grace touched the faded blue ink with her thumb, a quiet, radiant smile illuminating her face.

She folded the letter carefully, placed it into her private silver locket hanging around her neck, and snapped the locket closed against her chest.

Then, Grace took the heavy navy folder, closed its brass latch for the very last time, and placed it neatly into the seat pocket in front of her—a relic of a war that had been fought, won, and brought to a peaceful end.

"Look, Mommy!" Lily gasped softly, tapping the airplane window with her paintbrush handle. "The clouds look like big cotton castles!"

Grace leaned over, resting her chin gently on Lily's shoulder, looking out at the golden paradise floating above the world.

"They do, baby," Grace murmured, wrapping her arms around her daughter's waist, pulling her close. "They really do."

Down below, the old world of corporate greed, cruel sentences, and silent fear had faded into distant memory. Up here, in the clear, boundless sky that had been reclaimed by truth, courage, and a mother's unyielding love, there was only light, warmth, and the endless horizon of a brand-new beginning.
