Chapter 8 - The Price of Healing

Harrison slammed his master executive key into the central console. "Initialize emergency purge and global synthesis broadcast!" he commanded the voice-recognition computer.
"Voice match confirmed: Harrison Vance, CEO," the automated computer chime announced. "Synthesizing universal neuro-repair counter-agent."
Huge mechanical arms descended from the ceiling, pulling raw liquid compounds from the glass vats, rapidly mixing them into brilliant, glowing golden vials.
"No! You'll destroy ten years of research!" Thorne shrieked, struggling against her restraints.
Suddenly, a gunshot echoed through the laboratory.
Harrison stiffened. He looked down at his left shoulder—a high-caliber bullet had pierced through his jacket, blood instantly staining his white shirt red.
Standing near the broken elevator shaft was Julian. He had escaped his ties in the basement, his face bruised, his clothes torn, holding a dropped mercenary pistol with two shaking hands.
"I won't let you ruin me, Harrison!" Julian screamed hysterically. "I deserve the fortune! I worked for it!"
Julian aimed the gun straight at Harrison’s head.
"Julian... stop..." Harrison gasped, losing blood rapidly.
Kael, sitting in Harrison’s lap, opened his heavy eyes. Seeing the gun pointed at his father, the boy let out a guttural, primal cry.
Kael didn't touch a wire. He didn't slam the floor. He reached out his hands directly toward Julian.
A blinding arc of golden bio-electric energy—pure, unrefined nerve force—erupted from Kael’s chest, bridging the distance across the room. The blast struck Julian’s gun, vaporizing the metal weapon instantly and throwing Julian thirty feet backward through the glass display wall, knocking him permanently unconscious.
"Kael!" Harrison cried out.
The golden energy faded. Kael collapsed back into Harrison’s arms, his skin turning almost completely grey from his chest down to his toes. His breathing was so faint it barely moved his torn hoodie.
"System complete," the automated chime announced. "Five hundred vials of Universal Neuro-Repair counter-agent synthesized."

Harrison ignored his bleeding shoulder. He reached into the dispenser bay, grabbing the first golden vial. With trembling hands, he loaded it into an automatic pneumatic injector.
He didn't inject himself. He pressed the injector firmly against Kael’s neck and pulled the trigger.
