Chapter 3: The Lab Report

The hospital was a blur of fluorescent lights and the smell of antiseptic. Marcus stayed by my side, his knuckles white as he gripped my hand. We were in a small waiting room when Detective Miller returned, his face a mask of controlled fury.
"We found the toxicology results," he said, pulling us into a private hallway. "Lily’s system was saturated with a sedative—the same kind used in advanced tranquilizers. It wasn't an accident. And while we were processing the 'catering' area, we found something else."
He pulled out a folder. It wasn't just about Lily. He showed us ledgers, private bank records, and a series of encrypted messages between my mother, Vanessa, and a private medical clinic three towns over. For years, they had been operating a gray-market scheme, using my mother’s "status" to funnel illegal substances.

"They saw your daughter as a liability," Miller said, his voice dropping. "Not just because of the party. They were terrified that if she stayed around, someone would notice the pattern of neglect. They didn't just want to move her for the party; they wanted to remove her from the equation entirely."
The "perfect" family was a front for a criminal enterprise that had been operating under my nose since I was a teenager. The "embarrassment" of my pregnancy at eighteen had given them the perfect excuse to keep me isolated, controlled, and subservient.
