Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Spring arrived in Savannah with a burst of jasmine and magnolia blossoms.

On a warm afternoon, Marcus and I walked along the sandy shore near the mouth of the river. Maya, now an energetic toddler with soft curls and bright, curious eyes, was running ahead of us, giggling as she chased small white seagulls across the wet sand.

Marcus reached down and took my hand, his fingers intertwining naturally with mine.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked gently, looking down at me.

I looked out at the ocean, where large cargo ships moved slowly along the horizon, carrying goods across the world. Some of those ships bore the newly painted green-and-gold crest of Mercer-Vance.

"I was thinking about the night she was born," I admitted quietly. "About how terrified I was when Julian walked out of that room. I thought my whole world was ending."

Marcus stopped walking and turned to face me. He reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from my cheek.

"And now?" he asked.

I looked at my daughter, who had stopped to inspect a smooth pink seashell, laughing as the tiny waves tickled her feet. I looked at Marcus—a man who had shown me patience, respect, and deep, unwavering love. And I felt the strength of my own two feet planted firmly on the earth, supported by my family, my work, and my own absolute independence.

"Now," I smiled, feeling a profound, radiant warmth fill my chest, "I realize that night wasn't the end of my world at all."

"It was just the moment I took it back."

Marcus smiled, pulling me close and kissing me softly under the bright, golden light of the afternoon sun.

Down on the shore, Maya picked up her shell and held it high toward the sky, shouting with pure, untamed joy. The waves came in, washing away every old footprint on the sand, leaving behind only a clean, smooth shore ready for whatever new story we chose to write upon it.
