Chapter 5 - The Subpoena

Two weeks after Elena walked out, the legal storm began to gather on the horizon.

Marcus called me into his office in downtown Oklahoma City on a crisp Tuesday morning. His office smelled of aged leather, expensive cigars he never smoked, and legal briefs stacked six feet high.

"Grant, your ex-wife is playing hardball," Marcus said without preamble, sliding a thick manila folder across his polished mahogany desk. "Or rather, Richard Vance's legal team is funding her strategy."

I opened the folder. Inside were copies of counter-motions filed by Elena’s new representation, demanding joint custody, alimony, and a fifty-percent stake in my canine training facility, claiming she had contributed "sweat equity" during the early years of our marriage.

"Sweat equity?" I scoffed, leaning back in my chair. "She complained whenever dog hair got on her designer clothes."

"Legally, marriage is a partnership, Grant, even when one partner is a parasitic disaster," Marcus sighed, adjusting his glasses. "However, we have an ace up our sleeve. Remember that burner phone you handed over?"

"Of course."

"The forensic data recovery team pulled the deleted messages from the cloud sync before her account was deactivated. Not only do we have clear proof of child abandonment on the afternoon you rescued Tessa, but we also have text chains between Elena and Richard discussing how to liquidate your pre-marital trust assets through fraudulent corporate restructuring." Marcus tapped a finger on the document. "That crosses the line from civil divorce into federal wire fraud and conspiracy."

I felt a cold satisfaction wash over me. "Can we use it?"

"In family court? Absolutely. In criminal court? We hand it over to the U.S. Attorney's office as leverage." Marcus leaned forward, locking his eyes onto mine. "Grant, Richard Vance’s real estate firm is currently bidding on a multi-million-dollar municipal development contract with the city of Dallas. If a federal investigation into financial fraud and witness tampering blows up in his face right now, his partners will drop him faster than a hot potato."

"Do it," I said without hesitation. "End it."

Marcus smiled—a sharp, predatory grin that lawyers save for special occasions. "Consider it done."
