Chapter 7 - The First Meeting

The door to the pediatric recovery room opened quietly.

Chloe was sitting cross-legged on her cot, busy using a green crayon to color the grass beneath her purple horse. When she heard the door, she looked up, her big blue eyes widening as she saw the tall man in the dark suit walk into the room.

David froze near the doorway.

For all his power, for all his millions of dollars and his army of soldiers, David Carter looked completely defenseless as he stared at the small girl sitting on the bed. His breath hitched in his throat.

Chloe set her crayon down, looking at his dark suit, then at his pale face, and finally, directly into his eyes.

"You have my eyes," Chloe said simply, her innocent voice cutting through the heavy quiet of the room.

David swallowed hard, taking a slow, hesitant step forward, careful not to make any sudden movements that might frighten her. He dropped to one knee—a movement that clearly caused him immense physical pain, but he didn't care. He brought himself down to her eye level.

"I do," David said softly, his deep voice trembling slightly. "And I think you have mine."

"Are you the sick man?" Chloe asked, tilting her head. "The one who needed my special blood?"

David looked down at her small arm, seeing the tiny pink bandage over her vein. His eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Yes. I am."

"Did it work?" she asked eagerly. "Are you better?"

David reached out a hand, hesitating for a second before gently, softly tucking a loose curl behind her ear—the exact same gesture I did every single morning.

"It saved my life, sweetheart," David whispered, his voice cracking. "You saved my life."

Chloe beamed with pride, a bright, beautiful smile lighting up her face. "Mommy said my blood was super rare! I’m glad it helped you."

"Thank you, Chloe," David murmured, holding her tiny hand in his large, scarred palm, kissing the back of her knuckles with profound reverence. "Thank you."

I stood by the door, tears streaming silently down my cheeks as I watched them together.

David stood up slowly, keeping his eyes on Chloe for as long as he could, then turned and walked back out into the hallway where Marcus was waiting.

He looked at me, his blue eyes burning with an absolute, unbreakable resolve.

"Keep her here with Marcus’s best four men," David commanded quietly. "I’m going to River North. When I come back, Julian will never be a threat to either of you again."

May you like

"David," I called out as he turned to leave. "Be careful."

He paused, looking back over his shoulder with a faint smile. "I have a reason to live now, Natasha. I’m not dying today."
