Chapter 2 - The Shattered Merger

The silence on the oceanfront lawn lasted for five agonizing seconds before Richard Vance snapped his silver walking cane against the stone floor.

CRACK.

"The wedding is over," Richard Vance announced loudly, his voice echoing over the quiet lawn. "Every member of the Vance family and our corporate guests will vacate this property immediately."

"Richard! No! Please!" Luke screamed, rushing toward the hotel mogul, his hands raised in desperate supplication. "This is a misunderstanding! Chloe and I love each other! The merger between Atlantic Commercial and Vance Hotels—"

"The merger is dead, Luke," Richard Vance said, turning a look of such profound disgust onto Luke that the younger man flinched backward. "I brought my family here to celebrate a marriage built on honor, not to tie my hotel brand to a coward who abandoned his own newborn triplets to steal his wife's savings!"

"Father, please!" Chloe wept, tearing her diamond-encrusted veil off her head and throwing it onto the stone floor at Luke’s feet. "He lied to me about everything! He told me his ex-wife took all his money in the divorce!"

"Chloe, I love you!" Luke pleaded, trying to take her hand.

Chloe slapped him across the face with a sharp, cracking sound that made the remaining guests gasp.

"Don't touch me, you pathetic fraud!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking with humiliation. "You used me! You used my father’s name to secure your partnership at Atlantic!"

While the Vance family began ushering their wealthy guests toward the parking valet, Luke’s mother, Iris Sterling, collapsed onto a wooden dining chair, sobbing hysterically as she stared at my three children.

"My... my grandchildren," Iris whimpered, reaching a trembling hand out toward little Iris. "They're Sterlings... they have our blood..."

Little Iris stepped back behind my skirt, taking my hand tightly, looking down at the older woman with cool, quiet detachment.

"Don't touch her, Iris," I said, my voice as hard as ice. "Seven years ago, you told me my children were a 'fake trap.' You don't get to claim my children now that they are healthy, brilliant, and loved."

"Natalie," Luke whispered, turning around slowly. The confident, wealthy real estate executive was gone. He looked broken, his hair disheveled from sweat, his tux jacket open, standing amid the wreckage of his shattered wedding. "Natalie... please. Why did you do this here? Why in front of everyone?"

"Because you sent me an invitation, Luke," I replied, taking a step closer to him. "You wanted me to see what I lost. So I came to show you what you threw away."

"I... I can fix this," Luke stammered, his eyes darting frantically to the triplets. "We can do a custody agreement! I'm a senior partner now! I have money! I can provide for them!"

"Senior partner?" I smiled—a cold, knowing smile that sent a shiver down his spine. "Megan, give him his afternoon reading."

Megan, my personal assistant, stepped out from behind the stone pillar carrying a sleek black leather folder. She handed a document directly to Luke.

"What is this?" Luke stuttered, unfolding the paper with shaking hands.

"That is a formal notice of corporate acquisition," I explained smoothly. "Three months ago, my holding firm—Vance-Bennett Global Textiles—purchased seventy percent of the commercial debt notes of Atlantic Real Estate Group."

Luke’s eyes bulged out of his head. "What?!"

"I own your firm's mortgage notes, Luke," I said quietly. "And because Atlantic breached its debt-covenants this morning due to the cancellation of the Vance Hotel merger, my legal team has just initiated an emergency receivership. You aren't a senior partner anymore, Luke. You're unemployed."

May you like

Luke dropped the paper. His legs gave out beneath him, and he sank onto his knees on the flower-covered stone floor, staring up at me in total, paralyzing horror.

"Let's go, children," I said softly, turning my back on the ruined groom and his weeping mother. "Our driver is waiting."
