Chapter 10 - Unbroken

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Columbus sky in magnificent shades of violet, amber, and gold. The guests had slowly trickled home, leaving the backyard peaceful and quiet, save for the gentle hum of the evening crickets and the soft rustle of the oak trees overhead.

Mom had retired to the living room to rest her knee, and Nina had packed up her camera gear, giving me a warm, knowing hug before heading out to her car with a promise to see me at the office bright and early Monday morning.

I sat alone on the wooden porch swing, gently rocking back and forth in the cool evening air.

Inside her nursery upstairs, Lily was fast asleep in her crib, dreaming sweet, untroubled dreams of smash cake and balloons. Her future was secure, her college fund was growing, and her home—the home my grandfather and father had built, the home my mother fought for, and the home I defended—stood strong, unshakeable, and completely our own.

I reached down and touched the small gold necklace I wore around my neck—a delicate pendant engraved with Lily’s initials.

The night I went into labor, my husband had tried to steal everything I loved. He had lied, cheated, forged, and manipulated, thinking he could vanish into the shadows and leave me broken. But he had fundamentally misunderstood the strength of a mother protecting her child and a woman reclaiming her dignity.

The darkness had tested us, but it hadn't broken us. It had only forged us into something unbreakable.

I took a deep, steady breath of the crisp night air, looked up at the brilliant canopy of stars shining down over our house, and smiled.

We had won. And our story was only just beginning.
