Chapter 2 - The Foundation Shakes

Arthur Vance did not descend the stairs of the amphitheater; he marched down them like an invading general reclaiming a province that had forgotten his name. Behind him walked two younger men carrying identical black leather attache cases—his senior corporate counsel and his personal security chief. The rhythmic, heavy thud... thud... thud of his hand-made Italian leather shoes against the steps sounded like a countdown to an explosion.
Hunter froze in the aisle, his patronizing smile evaporating into a look of profound, aristocratic confusion. He knew Arthur Vance, of course. Every business professional in the tri-state area knew the face from the covers of Forbes and The Wall Street Journal. But Hunter had never met him. When Hunter had married Selena six years ago, she had entered the relationship under her mother’s maiden name, having completely severed public ties with her multi-billionaire father after a bitter, structural family dispute regarding her choice to pursue public-sector academia instead of corporate governance.
Hunter had spent six years believing he had married an ordinary, middle-class girl from upstate New York whose only asset was her brain.
"Mr. Brennan," Arthur Vance’s voice didn't need a microphone. It was a deep, resonant baritone that filled every corner of the vast room, carrying the unmistakable weight of fifty years of absolute corporate dominance. He stopped three feet away from Hunter, his glacial blue eyes boring into the younger man’s face until Hunter instinctively took a step back. "You have exactly ten seconds to remove your hands from your pockets, step away from my daughter’s lectern, and sit your uninvited, mediocre carcass back into that chair before my security staff removes you from this campus permanently."
A sharp, collective gasp echoed from the committee table. Dr. Elizabeth Vance stood up, her hand flying to her silver bob. "Arthur? What on earth is the meaning of this?"
Arthur turned his head just enough to acknowledge the department chair, his expression softening by a fraction of a degree. "Elizabeth. I apologize for the structural disruption to your proceedings. But as the primary underwriter of the Vance Endowed Chair in Economics, and as the biological father of the candidate standing before you, I will not sit in the gallery while a pair of low-rent parasites attempt to commit character assassination against a member of my family."
"Father?" Hunter’s voice cracked, turning into a thin, high-pitched squeak that sounded entirely pathetic compared to Arthur's deep rumble. He spun around to look at Selena, his eyes wide with a terrifying, sudden realization that his entire world had just shifted on its axis. "Selena... your father is Arthur Vance? You... you told me your dad was a retired schoolteacher from Troy."
"I told you my stepfather was a retired schoolteacher, Hunter," Selena said, her voice rising from the depths of her chest, entirely free of the fear that had consumed her three minutes ago. She stood tall behind the lectern, the light from her presentation slide illuminating her sharp, asymmetrical haircut like a crown. "I didn't think my biological father's financial status was relevant to a marriage built on mutual respect. But then again, I also didn't think my husband would let his mother hold me down while he cut my hair off with a pair of kitchen scissors."
Arthur Vance’s jaw tightened, the muscles along his temple leaping like coiled steel wires. He looked up at the lectern, his eyes tracking the jagged, brutal edges of Selena's hair. The silence that followed was more terrifying than any shout. It was the quiet that precedes a demolition.
He turned slowly to face Hunter again, his face a mask of absolute, unvarnished executioner's ice.
"You cut her hair," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a whisper that felt like a razor blade against the ear. "You and that... that floral-print tragedy sitting in the back row. You thought if you mutilated her body, you could break her mind. You thought if you took her hair, she wouldn't have the courage to stand in front of this committee and claim the title she spent eight years of midnight oil earning."
"It was an accident!" Barbara shrieked from the top row, her face turning a violent, blotchy shade of purple as she clutched her handbag to her chest. "She was hysterical! We were trying to calm her down! She’s lying to you, Mr. Vance! She’s always been an ungrateful, prideful girl—"
Arthur didn't even look up at her. He simply raised his left hand, a single, precise movement of his index finger.
His security chief, a massive, quiet man named Marcus, stepped forward instantly. He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a digital recording device, and pressed play.
A voice filled the amphitheater—loud, clear, and dripping with venom. It was Barbara’s voice, recorded through the thin bathroom door of the apartment the night before by the building’s automated smart-home security system, which Arthur Vance’s corporate real estate division happened to own and monitor.
“Maybe now you’ll learn your place,” the recorded voice of Barbara whispered through the speakers, followed immediately by the distinct, sickening snip... snip of steel blades and Selena’s muffled, heartbreaking cry of disbelief. “No serious committee will take you seriously looking like this. Tomorrow you’ll stay home, where you belong.”
The recording stopped.
Hunter looked as though he were about to vomit. He collapsed back into his seat, his arms shaking so violently his watch clattered against the wooden desk. Barbara sank down beside him, her mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from a frozen lake.
"Mr. Brennan," Arthur Vance said, his senior counsel stepping forward to hand him a thick, blue-stamped legal folder. "At six-fifteen this morning, a temporary restraining order was issued by the state supreme court, separating you and your mother from my daughter by a distance of no less than five hundred yards. Furthermore, as the primary guarantor of the mortgage on your luxury apartment in the heights—which you so foolishly allowed Selena to co-sign using her family trust baseline—Vance Global Real Estate has officially declared a material breach of the residential covenant due to domestic violence. Your lease is terminated. Your belongings are currently being packed into cardboard boxes by a professional eviction crew."

He stepped closer, leaning down until his face was inches from Hunter’s terrified eyes.
"You wanted her to stay home, Hunter," Arthur whispered. "Now you don't have one. Get out of my daughter's room."
