Chapter 10 - The Architecture of Joy

Three years later. Early summer in Charlottesville.
The sun was setting over the Blue Ridge Mountains, painting the sky in breathtaking hues of lavender, rose, and burnished gold.
The courtyard behind my farmhouse was filled with fairy lights strung between ancient apple trees. Long wooden tables were set with white linen, wildflowers, and candles, surrounding fifty of our closest friends and family.
I stood on the back porch, wearing a simple, elegant lace dress that caught the soft evening breeze. My dark hair was pinned back with small white jasmine blossoms.
My brother Liam walked up the wooden steps, holding a glass of wine, a massive grin on his face.
"You ready, Haze?" Liam asked, offering his elbow.
"More than ready," I smiled, taking his arm.
We walked down the steps onto the lush green grass. The soft melody of an acoustic guitar played as we walked toward the wooden arbor at the edge of the garden—an arbor that Julian had hand-carved himself out of reclaimed Virginia oak over the last six months.
Standing beneath the arbor was Julian Thorne. He wore a crisp linen suit, his hazel eyes shining with tears of pure happiness as he watched me walk toward him.
Beside him stood my father, who was officiating our small, intimate wedding ceremony.
When Liam handed my hand to Julian, Julian squeezed my fingers gently, leaning down to whisper, "You look breathtaking, Hazel."
"So do you," I whispered back, my heart overflowing with a quiet, sacred joy.
My father stepped forward, holding a leather-bound book of vows.
"Friends and family," my father began, his voice echoing warmly through the quiet garden. "We are gathered here today not just to join two people in marriage, but to celebrate the triumph of genuine love, respect, and mutual honor."
My father looked at us both, a deep, proud smile illuminating his face.
"Hazel and Julian have built a life together based on the highest principles of craftsmanship—not just in the buildings they restore, but in the foundation of their own hearts. They know that true love doesn't tear down to build itself up. True love protects, honors, and uplifts."
Julian held my hands, looking directly into my eyes as he spoke his vows.
"Hazel," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "When I met you, I saw a woman who had every reason to lock her heart away from the world forever. But instead of hiding, you chose to build something beautiful. I promise to stand by your side as your equal, your partner, and your biggest champion. I promise to protect your light, honor your strength, and love you unconditionally for all the days of my life."
Tears of pure happiness tracked down my cheeks as I made my vows to him.
"Julian," I said softly, my voice steady and true. "You showed me that love isn't a game, a test, or a scoreboard. Love is a safe place to land. You gave me a home where I never have to apologize for being myself. I give you my heart, my trust, and my life, forever."
"By the power vested in me," my father announced, his voice ringing out with immense pride, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Julian, kiss your bride!"
Julian pulled me into his arms, dipping me gently as he kissed me under the canopy of apple blossoms and fairy lights.
The garden erupted into cheers, laughter, and joyous applause. Liam threw handfuls of white rose petals into the air, and my mother wiped tears of joy from her eyes as everyone rushed forward to celebrate with us.
Later that night, as the party continued around the roaring fire pit, Julian and I walked to the edge of the orchard, looking out over the illuminated valley below.
Julian wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.
"Happy, Mrs. Thorne?" he whispered into my ear.
I leaned back against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat—a rhythm that promised safety, respect, and forever.

I looked up at the stars glittering brilliantly in the clear Virginia sky, feeling the cool night air on my face, knowing that the trap was gone, the score was settled, and the life I had built was finally, undeniably mine.
"I’ve never been happier," I whispered, holding his hands tight as we walked forward together into the light.
