Chapter 7 - The Shadows Stir

The autumn leaves gave way to the sharp, brutal bite of a early Chicago winter. Snow blanketed the Lake Forest estate, turning the sprawling lawns into a quiet, white expanse. Inside, the house was alive with warmth. The grand fireplaces roared, and for the first time in years, holiday decorations were being erected in every hallway.

However, in my line of work, peace is rarely a permanent state. It is a fragile luxury bought with constant vigilance.

It was a Tuesday evening, around eight o'clock. The girls were upstairs in the playroom with Ethan, working on a massive gingerbread house under Mrs. Gable's supervision. Evelyn was in the small parlor, answering emails regarding Vance Logistics' expansion into regional rail networks.

I sat in my study, staring at a high-encrypted laptop screen.

Marcus stood across from my desk, his coat still dusted with melting snow. His expression was grimmer than usual.

"What is it, Marcus?" I asked, my voice cutting through the quiet hum of the computer fans.

"We have a problem in the eastern ward, boss," Marcus said, laying a satellite photograph onto my desk. "Dominic Moretti is in federal custody, but his primary backer wasn't local."

I looked at the photograph. It showed a high-end private airfield outside Milwaukee, where a sleek corporate jet had landed two hours ago.

"Who?" I demanded.

"Gideon Vance," Marcus revealed, his tone heavy.

My brows furrowed instantly. "Evelyn's uncle?"

"Her late father's estranged elder brother," Marcus confirmed. "Gideon moved his operations to Europe fifteen years ago after a massive fallout with Evelyn's dad over the direction of Vance Logistics. He's been running high-level financial laundering networks out of Zurich. When David Mercer failed to secure the shipping charter, and Moretti was taken down, Gideon lost nearly twenty million dollars in clean offshore routes."

I leaned back in my leather armchair, steepling my fingers. "So Gideon was the true architect behind Mercer's attempt on Evelyn's business."

"Precisely," Marcus said. "Mercer was just a local enforcer, and Moretti was the muscle. Gideon was the money. He just landed in Milwaukee, and our intelligence indicates he has hired a team of European contract operators. He doesn't just want the shipping charter now, Alexander. He wants revenge on you for dismantling his twenty-million-dollar pipeline."

A cold, dark fury ignited deep in my chest.

Gideon Vance was blood to Evelyn and the girls, yet he had orchestrated the systematic financial destruction of his own family, unleashing bottom-feeders like Mercer and Moretti onto his brother's daughter and four innocent young grandnieces.

"Does Evelyn know he's in the country?" I asked softly.

"Not yet," Marcus replied. "She hasn't spoken to Gideon since she was a teenager. She assumes he's still living in Switzerland."

I stood up, walking toward the high glass windows overlooking the snow-covered driveway. Down below, two armored SUVs sat on standby, their exhaust fumes rising white against the dark night air.

"Keep this from Evelyn and the children for now," I commanded. "They have spent months healing from the terror Mercer inflicted on them. I will not have Gideon Vance bringing fear back into this house."

"He's not like Moretti, boss," Marcus warned softly. "Gideon doesn't care about street wars or public galas. He operates like a ghost. His contract operators are professionals."

"So am I," I replied, turning around, my eyes dark with lethal intent. "Deploy the outer perimeter guards along the forest line. Increase the detail at Ethan's school and Vance Logistics' headquarters. If Gideon Vance wants a war with his family, he will find me standing in his path."

Before Marcus could answer, the heavy oak door of my study creaked open softly.

Lily stood in the doorway. She was wearing pink fleece pajamas with little bear ears on the hood, holding a stuffed rabbit by one arm. Her hair was messy, and her big hazel eyes looked sleepy.

"Daddy?" she whimpered softly, rubbing her eyes with a tiny fist.

The deadly, cold atmosphere in the room evaporated instantly. Marcus adjusted his jacket, stepping back into the shadows with a respectful nod.

I walked across the room, kneeling down in front of the four-year-old. "What's wrong, sweetheart? Why aren't you upstairs with your sisters?"

"Ethan said the gingerbread house collapsed," Lily sniffled, stepping closer and wrapping her tiny arms around my neck. "And Maya took the big gumdrop. Can you fix it?"

I lifted her into my arms, cradling her against my chest. Her small, warm body relaxed against my wool sweater instantly.

"I will fix the gingerbread house, Lily," I promised gently, kissing her forehead. "And Maya will give you the gumdrop."

May you like

I looked over Lily's head at Marcus, giving him a single, sharp nod that communicated my final orders without a single word.

Gideon Vance thought he was coming to Chicago to reclaim twenty million dollars and crush an underworld rival. He had no idea that he was coming to face a father protecting his home.
