Chapter 14 - The Heist on Superior Street

The revelation hit the room like a thunderbolt. The Sovereign Garment—the three-thousand-hour masterpiece currently sitting in the center of the main hall under framed white roses—contained the sole piece of evidence that could save The Vance Artisanal Guild from destruction.
"Why did you put it there?" Ethan asked, baffled.
"Because I knew Julian’s men were going to search my apartment after I gave him the ledger pages," Victoria confessed, her voice shaking. "I was working on the lower hem lining last Friday night. I slipped the folded carbon receipt inside a protective silk pouch and hand-stitched it into the structural horsehair lining of the train. I knew no one would ever tear open The Sovereign Garment... unless they knew it was there."
"And Julian doesn't know?" Margaret asked.
"No," Victoria said. "He thinks he has the only proof that ever existed."
Before Margaret could respond, the heavy security doors at the top of the dye room stairs burst open. Harold Bennett came rushing down, his face dark with panic.
"Maggie! We have a problem," Harold shouted. "Julian’s attorneys just arrived with a court enforcement officer and a team of private movers. They have an emergency seizure order for all 'contested physical inventory' related to the 1982 estate!"
"They're taking the dresses?" Ethan shouted.
"They're taking The Sovereign Garment," Harold corrected, breathless. "They claim it was created using materials purchased under the contested corporate entity. They are loading it into a climate-controlled transport van right now!"
Margaret did not panic. Her mind, accustomed to calculating complex geometric patterns out of flat fabric, immediately mapped out the situation.
"Vanessa!" Margaret called out as Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs, holding her phone.
"I’m here, Mother Margaret!" Vanessa called down. "I tried to delay the sheriff’s officer, but Julian’s lawyer brought a signed writ from Judge Miller!"
"Where is Daniel?" Margaret demanded.
"He's in the parking lot, standing in front of the transport truck's wheels!" Vanessa reported. "He’s refusing to let them drive off!"
"Ethan, Harold, come with me," Margaret ordered, her voice commanding and crisp. "Victoria, you are coming too. You are going to show us exactly where that stitch is."
They rushed up the stairs and through the main hall. The grand room was in chaos. Two men in black suits were carefully wrapping The Sovereign Garment in protective archival plastic, while Julian Vance stood nearby, arms crossed, a triumphant smile on his face. Outside the glass doors, Daniel was yelling at a tow truck driver who was attempting to clear the driveway.
"Stop right there!" Margaret’s voice rang out across the hall like a gunshot.
Julian turned around, his smile widening. "Ah, Margaret. I see you've brought your little entourage. I'm afraid the court has granted us temporary custody of all primary assets until the title dispute is resolved in court next month. A precious piece like this... it belongs in a secure vault, not on display for tourists."
"You took three pages from my ledger, Julian," Margaret said, stepping right up to him, refusing to yield an inch of space. "You used a terrified girl to do your dirty work."
Julian’s eyes flicked briefly toward Victoria, who was shrinking back behind Ethan. "I have no idea what you're talking about, my dear. I am merely enforcing my legal rights."
"You want The Sovereign Garment?" Margaret asked, her tone suddenly shifting from furious to strangely pragmatic. "Take it."
Harold turned to her in shock. "Maggie, no! You can't let him take it!"
"Let him take it, Harold," Margaret repeated, looking directly into Julian’s eyes. "Julian wants to display his prize. But a garment of that scale cannot be moved without damaging the structural boning inside the bodice unless it is properly secured by a master tailor."
She stepped forward and touched the plastic wrapping over the dress. "If you transport this gown without securing the inner harness, three thousand hours of hand embroidery will tear under its own weight on the highway. You will destroy the very asset you are trying to steal."
Julian hesitated. He knew nothing about garment construction, but he knew The Sovereign Garment was valued at over a million dollars as an artwork. Destroying it would ruin his leverage.
"What are you proposing, Margaret?" Julian asked suspiciously.
"I will personally secure the internal harness before you load it onto your truck," Margaret said smoothly. "In front of your legal officer. Give me five minutes with my shears and thread."
May you like
Julian looked at the sheriff’s deputy, who gave a brief nod. "Five minutes, Margaret. Under our supervision."
Margaret turned to Victoria. "Bring me my silver shears and a spool of silver silk thread from my workbench. Now."
