Chapter 6 - The Betrayal of Graham Whitaker

With Vivian locked away in maximum security, Graham Whitaker’s defense collapsed like a house of cards. Abandoned by his mistress, stripped of his stolen wealth, and facing decades in prison, Graham grew increasingly unhinged in his cell at Plymouth County.

Two weeks before my scheduled delivery, Elias sat in an interrogation room at the federal courthouse. On the other side of the stainless-steel table sat Graham, wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to a ring anchored in the center of the table.

Graham looked terrible. He had lost twenty pounds, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his hair was messy and unkempt.

"I want a plea deal, Monroe," Graham rasped, leaning forward as far as his chains would allow. "I'll plead guilty to the financial charges. Five years in a minimum-security facility. That's my offer."

Elias chuckled dryly, leaning back in his metal chair and crossing his legs. "You are in no position to offer anything, Graham. We have you on video pushing a pregnant woman down marble stairs. We have your signature on thirty-two fraudulent wire transfers. You are going to prison for thirty years, minimum."

Graham’s face twisted into a snarl. "It was Vivian's idea! All of it! She approached me three years ago! She told me she had a way to siphon the Monroe trust without triggering automatic bank alerts! She manipulated me!"

"You were a very willing victim," Elias said quietly.

"I loved Lena!" Graham yelled, tears of self-pity filling his eyes. "I really did! In the beginning! But she was always so... so distant! She was always mourning you! Every time I looked at her, I felt like I was living in the shadow of a dead hero! Vivian made me feel like a king!"

Elias leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, his eyes narrowing into slits.

"You didn't treat her like a king, Graham. You treated her like a bank account," Elias said softly. "And as for loving her... you left her penniless, frozen out of her own medical insurance, and pushed her down a staircase while she was carrying your children."

"They're my sons!" Graham shouted. "You can't keep me from my sons! When they grow up, I will tell them that their uncle put their father in prison!"

Elias slowly stood up. He walked around the table, leaning close to Graham's ear.

"They will never know your name, Graham," Elias whispered, his voice dripping with venom. "Tomorrow morning, the probate court is issuing a complete, permanent termination of your parental rights based on domestic violence and attempted murder. Their last name will be Monroe. Their legal father will be listed as 'Unknown.' You will die in a concrete cell, and my nephews will grow up knowing that their mother was saved by a family that actually loved her."

Graham began to scream, thrashing violently against the table, sending the metal chair clattering against the concrete floor.

"You can't do this!" Graham shrieked as two guards burst into the room to pin him down. "She's my wife! They're my babies! Lena! LENA!"

Elias walked out of the room, letting the heavy steel door slam shut behind him, cutting off Graham's frantic cries forever.
