Chapter 10 - The Family We Chose

One year later.

The grand lawn of my River Oaks estate was transformed into an ethereal wonderland of white orchids, fairy lights, and elegant silk canopies.

Soft violin music drifted through the warm evening air as seventy guests—our closest friends, reformed business associates, and my dedicated security staff—sat in mahogany chairs arranged across the grass.

I stood under a floral archway near the garden, wearing a tailored black tuxedo. Beside me stood Marcus, acting as my best man, wearing a rare, genuine smile on his usually stoic face.

The music shifted into a breathtaking, triumphant procession.

The French doors opened, and out stepped Avery and Sophie, wearing matching flower-girl dresses made of ivory lace, tossing pink rose petals onto the green aisle. They were grinning from ear to ear, clearly loving every second of their important job.

And then came Clara.

She took my breath away.

She wore an elegant ivory gown with delicate lace sleeves and a flowing train that swept gracefully over the grass. She carried a bouquet of white peonies and lavender. She didn't have a father to walk her down the aisle, but she didn't walk alone—she walked with a radiant confidence, her eyes locked onto mine from the moment her feet touched the grass.

When she reached the archway, I took her hands in mine. Her fingers were warm, steady, and filled with the promise of a lifetime.

“You look like a dream,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.

“It’s not a dream, Ethan,” she smiled softly, her hazel eyes shining. “It’s our life.”

The minister stepped forward, speaking words of love, resilience, and the beauty of families built not just by blood, but by choice.

When it came time for the vows, I looked directly into Clara’s eyes, holding her hands tightly.

“Clara,” I said, my voice strong and clear. “Three blocks away from this house, I thought I was returning to catch a enemy. Instead, I found the savior of my family. You taught me how to be a real father. You brought warmth into a cold house and healed three broken hearts. I promise to cherish you, honor you, and protect you and our daughters for as long as I live.”

Clara squeezed my hands, a single tear of pure joy trailing down her cheek.

“Ethan,” she spoke, her voice ringing clearly across the lawn. “I used to think my life was defined by running and hiding from fear. But when I met you and the girls, I found a courage I never knew I possessed. You gave me safety, love, and a family to belong to. I choose you today, tomorrow, and forever.”

“By the power vested in me,” the minister announced with a bright smile, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. Ethan, you may kiss your bride!”

I pulled Clara into my arms, lifting her into a deep, sweeping kiss as the crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause.

Avery and Sophie immediately cheered, running up to wrap their arms around our legs, joining the embrace. I picked up Sophie in my right arm and Avery in my left, leaning in so Clara and I could press our foreheads together in the center of our tight family circle.

Later that evening, as the stars filled the clear Texas sky, I stood near the edge of the lawn watching Clara dance with Avery and Sophie under the glowing fairy lights. Their laughter echoed across the grounds—pure, sweet, and boundless.

Marcus walked up beside me, handing me a glass of scotch.

“You did good, Boss,” Marcus said quietly, looking out at the dancing family. “No cartels, no enemies, no threats.”

I looked at my wife, holding my daughters’ hands as they spun in circles on the grass, their glowing smiles illuminating the dark night.

“I didn't do this, Marcus,” I smiled, taking a sip of scotch. “She did.”

I set my glass down on a table and walked out onto the lawn toward my family. As soon as Avery saw me coming, she reached out her hand.

“Daddy! Come dance with us!”

I took my daughter's hand, grabbed my wife around the waist, and joined the dance. The darkness of the past was entirely gone, replaced forever by the light of the family we had built together.
