Chapter 7 - The Trap Reverted

The lobby of the Whitmore Grand was packed with reporters, television crews, and major shareholders. The scandal of the "billionaire's adopted charity case turned thief" had hit the local news cycle like a hurricane.

Julian Vance stood near the podium, looking immaculate in a dark navy suit. He could already see the headlines: Vance Saves Whitmore from Con Artists, Appointed New CEO. Claire Hargrove stood at the back of the crowd, wearing a large pair of sunglasses, a smug smile of revenge on her face.

Harold Whitmore walked out from the elevator, accompanied by two security guards. He did not look broken. He walked with a steady, fierce pace, his cane striking the marble floor with the rhythm of thunder.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian spoke into the microphone, stepping aside for his boss. "Mr. Harold Whitmore will now give his official statement."

Harold stepped up to the podium, looking out at the wall of flashing cameras.

"Yesterday, an allegation was made against Thomas Bennett," Harold began, his voice echoing clearly through the grand space. "An allegation of theft, supported by digital logs and bank transfers. My Chief Operating Officer, Julian Vance, advised me to cut ties with the Bennett family immediately."

Julian nodded solemnly from the side of the stage.

"But forty years ago," Harold continued, his eyes locking onto Julian with an icy intensity, "I learned that when a storm hits, you don't look at the surface. You look at the foundation. I hired a private forensic cyber-security firm out of Washington last night to look into our corporate servers."

Julian's smile froze.

Harold clicked a remote control, and the massive digital display screen in the lobby—which usually showed hotel advertisements—flashed to life.

It displayed a security camera feed from three nights ago. The footage clearly showed Julian Vance sitting at Thomas's desk after midnight, using a master key override card, typing into the terminal, and printing out documents. Beside the video was a digital IP log showing that the $250,000 had never gone to Ruth Bennett; it had been routed through a shell company owned by Julian Vance and Claire Hargrove, hidden in a Cayman Islands account.

The lobby erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters began shouting questions, their cameras turning from Harold directly to Julian's pale, sweating face.

"Julian Vance," Harold said into the microphone, his voice like cracking ice. "You thought you could use my love for Samuel to destroy his family. You thought you could frame a boy whose shoes you aren't fit to polish. The police officers at the back of this room are not here for Thomas. They are here for you."

Four uniform officers stepped out from the crowd, grabbing Julian by his arms before he could even sprint for the side exit. At the same time, two detectives blocked Claire Hargrove at the revolving doors, clicking handcuffs onto her wrists as she screamed in rage.

"Thomas Bennett was released two hours ago with a full apology from the state attorney," Harold shouted over the noise of the press. "And he is standing right there."

The crowd parted as Thomas walked into the lobby, wearing a clean suit, his head held high. Beside him walked Ruth, her arm tucked securely into his. The very guests who had watched Claire insult her months ago were now standing up, their applause filling the grand marble hall like a wave of pure justice.
