Chapter 4 - The Shadow War Begins

By midnight, the Benadetti estate was transformed into a fortress under siege. Armed guards in tactical gear patrolled the perimeter walls, high-powered spotlights cut through the thick coastal fog, and heavy armored SUVs blocked the main gates.

Inside the nursery, Marco sat beside Sophia’s bed, holding her small, warm hand in his. The little girl was sleeping fitfully, her brow furrowed with mild fever, monitored by two private nurses and a portable EKG machine.

"Is Stepmom Isabella gone?" Sophia asked suddenly, opening her dark eyes sleepily, her voice barely a whisper.

Marco stroked her hair gently, his heart aching with an intensity that threatened to crush him. "She had to go away for a while, princess. She won't be coming back."

"I heard her shouting earlier," Sophia murmured, clutching her favorite stuffed velvet bear against her chest. "She told Maria that I wasn't supposed to be here. Daddy... am I sick because I did something bad?"

Marco felt a sharp pain in his throat. He leaned down and pressed a long, reverent kiss against her forehead. "You are the best thing that ever happened to this world, Sophia. You didn't do anything wrong. Daddy is going to make sure you get completely better. I promise you."

He waited until her breathing evened out into deep sleep before standing up and walking out to the balcony.

Cassian was waiting in the hallway, holding a secure satellite tablet. "Boss, Isabella broke after three minutes of the dummy injection. She gave up an address in the industrial docks of Port Newark. An abandoned chemical refinery owned by a front corporation."

"Was she telling the truth about the antidote?" Marco asked.

"Dr. Chen verified her statement," Cassian nodded grimly. "The compound creates a specific chemical binding agent in the bloodstream. Standard medical science doesn't have an inverse binder for this specific strain. If we don't get the original neutralizing formula from Julian's team within thirty-six hours, Sophia’s liver will suffer permanent failure."

Marco pulled his tailored coat over his shoulders, his expression hardening into pure iron. "Call the full council. Mobilize every soldier under the Benadetti banner. Tell them the Iron Hand is going to war."

"Boss," Cassian hesitated, his face shadowed with concern. "If Julian has been preparing for fifteen years, he isn't just sitting in a warehouse waiting for us. It’s a trap. He wants you to march right into his crosshairs."

"I know it's a trap," Marco said, checking the action on his custom Kimber .45 pistol and sliding it into his shoulder holster. "That’s why I’m going to burn the crosshairs to the ground."
