Chapter 3 – “The Mafia Boss’s Impossible Choice”

The first rule Vincent Moretti had ever learned was simple:

Never let anyone see what you care about.

In his world, love was not a weakness because it made people soft.

Love was dangerous because it gave enemies a target.

A man could survive losing money.

He could survive losing power.

He could survive losing a war.

But losing someone he loved?

That was the kind of wound that never healed.

For years, Vincent had built walls around himself.

Thick walls.

Invisible walls.

Walls made from fear, respect, and reputation.

People saw the cold businessman.

The ruthless negotiator.

The man who could silence an entire room with a single glance.

Nobody saw the boy who had once believed people meant what they said.

Nobody saw the man who had promised himself he would never trust blindly again.

Until Lily Porter walked into his life carrying a basket of towels and a secret hidden in a wedding cake.

And now…

everyone knew she mattered.

That was the problem.

The Moretti mansion went into lockdown before noon.

No one entered.

No one left.

Every employee was questioned.

Every delivery record was examined.

Every camera was reviewed.

Vincent stood in his office as information piled up around him.

The fake bakery.

The dead baker.

The hidden memory card.

The connection to the Vale family.

Everything pointed toward a plan.

But there was one piece that didn't fit.

Lily.

Why had the enemy allowed her to see?

Why had they allowed a child to discover the truth?

Carmine placed another folder on the desk.

“Boss.”

Vincent looked up.

“What now?”

“We traced the fake bakery documents.”

“And?”

“They were created six months ago.”

Vincent frowned.

“Six months?”

“Yes.”

“Why would someone prepare a fake bakery half a year before my wedding?”

Carmine hesitated.

“Because maybe the wedding wasn't the target.”

The room became silent.

Vincent opened the folder.

Inside were documents about his family.

His father.

His grandfather.

Old business records.

Old agreements.

And something that made his expression change.

A photograph.

A young woman.

A child.

A name written on the back.

Lillian Grace Porter.

Vincent stared.

“Where did you get this?”

“It was inside the memory card.”

Vincent picked it up.

The photograph showed Grace.

Years younger.

Holding a baby.

A baby girl.

Lily.

His eyes narrowed.

“Why would Adrien have this?”

Carmine didn't answer.

Because they both knew.

There were only two possibilities.

Either Adrien knew something about Lily…

or he had been searching for her.

Grace sat in the guest room with Lily.

Neither spoke.

The silence between them was heavy.

Finally Lily asked:

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Did you know Mr. Moretti before?”

Grace looked at her.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Grace sighed.

“Your father knew him.”

Lily froze.

“My father?”

She rarely asked about him.

Not because she didn't care.

Because she had learned that some questions hurt her mother.

Grace looked down.

“Yes.”

“What was he like?”

A sad smile appeared.

“He was kind.”

Lily waited.

“And?”

Grace looked toward the window.

“He was brave.”

“What happened?”

Grace’s fingers tightened.

“He found out too much.”

The answer was quiet.

But Lily understood.

Adults always used simple words when the truth was painful.

Found out too much.

Left suddenly.

Couldn't come back.

Made a mistake.

Those were the words people used when they were hiding something.

“Did Mr. Moretti know him?”

Grace nodded.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Grace closed her eyes.

“Your father was the only person Vincent trusted.”

That surprised Lily.

Because Vincent Moretti didn't seem like someone who trusted anyone.

“What happened between them?”

Grace didn't answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

And dangerous.

Twenty years earlier…

Vincent Moretti was not yet the man people feared.

He was younger.

Angrier.

Still trying to escape the shadow of his father.

His father had built the Moretti empire.

But he had also built enemies.

Many of them.

Vincent had one person who always told him the truth.

Daniel Porter.

Grace’s husband.

Daniel wasn't a criminal.

He wasn't powerful.

He wasn't wealthy.

But he was intelligent.

He saw things others missed.

Just like Lily.

Daniel discovered that someone inside the Moretti organization was stealing from the family.

He found documents.

Proof.

Names.

And before he could reveal everything…

he disappeared.

Everyone believed he ran away.

Everyone except Vincent.

Vincent knew Daniel.

Daniel would never abandon Grace.

Never abandon his child.

Something happened.

Something terrible.

And Vincent spent years trying to find the truth.

But every path ended with one name.

Adrien Vale.

Present day.

Vincent stood outside Grace's room.

He heard her talking to Lily.

He heard the pain in her voice.

And for the first time in years, he felt something he didn't want to feel.

Guilt.

Because while he had been protecting his empire…

Grace had been protecting a child.

A child connected to a mystery that had started long before she was born.

He knocked.

The conversation stopped.

“Come in.”

Vincent entered.

Lily immediately looked at him.

“Did you find out who did it?”

Vincent looked at her.

“No.”

Her disappointment was obvious.

But she nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

Vincent frowned.

“Why are you sorry?”

“Because I thought I could help.”

Something about those words bothered him.

A nine-year-old should not feel responsible for solving dangerous adult problems.

“You already helped.”

“But not enough.”

Vincent became quiet.

Then he said:

“Lily.”

She looked up.

“People will tell you that being useful is the same as being valuable.”

She listened.

“They're wrong.”

Grace watched him carefully.

Vincent continued:

“You don't have to solve every problem to deserve protection.”

The room became still.

Because nobody had ever said that to Lily before.

Not even her mother.

Not because Grace didn't believe it.

Because Grace had spent years surviving.

Vincent turned to Grace.

“You should have told me.”

Grace looked down.

“I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

A pause.

“Of everyone.”

That answer stayed with him.

Because Vincent understood fear.

More than anyone.

That evening, Vincent made a decision.

A dangerous one.

A decision that would change everything.

He gathered his men.

Carmine.

Security.

Trusted advisors.

Everyone expected orders.

Everyone expected revenge.

Instead, Vincent said:

“Protect Grace Porter and Lily Porter.”

The room went silent.

Carmine looked surprised.

“Boss?”

“Twenty-four hours.”

“Understood.”

“And nobody tells them they're being watched.”

Carmine nodded.

Then hesitated.

“What about the investigation?”

Vincent looked toward the mansion windows.

Toward the room where Lily was sitting.

“Find whoever started this.”

A pause.

“Before they reach her.”

But Vincent wasn't the only person making decisions.

Across the city, inside a private office overlooking New Jersey, Adrien Vale watched a video.

A video from the Moretti mansion.

The moment Lily destroyed the cake.

The moment she pulled out the napkin.

The moment Vincent looked at her.

Adrien watched it again.

And again.

Then he smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he was impressed.

“She really is Daniel's daughter.”

The person sitting across from him remained silent.

Adrien poured himself a drink.

“Do you know what the problem with Vincent Moretti is?”

No answer.

“He thinks fear controls people.”

He looked at the screen.

At Lily.

“He forgot curiosity does more damage.”

The other person finally spoke.

“What happens now?”

Adrien smiled.

“Now?”

He looked at the frozen image of Lily.

“Now Vincent learns the truth.”

A pause.

“And then he loses everything.”

The next morning, Lily found something outside her bedroom door.

A small envelope.

No name.

No address.

Just one sentence written on the front.

You should have stayed quiet.

Her hands shook.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not old.

Not damaged.

A recent photograph.

Taken yesterday.

Of Lily.

Standing beside the cake.

The moment before she broke it.

Her heart stopped.

Because whoever sent it…

had been watching her.

Inside the envelope was one more thing.

A note.

Five words.

Your father never left.

Lily stared.

The world seemed to tilt.

Her father.

The man she had spent her whole life believing was gone.

The man her mother never talked about.

The man Vincent Moretti had once trusted.

Alive?

Impossible.

She ran.

Straight to Vincent.

And when he saw the note in her hands…

his face changed.

Because Vincent Moretti knew one thing.

The person behind the wedding cake wasn't finished.

Not even close.

May you like

And now they had chosen their next weapon.

The truth.
