Chapter 3 – “The Secret Eleanor Buried for Years”

Nathan did not sleep that night.

Not because he was angry.

Anger would have been easier.

Anger was clean.

Simple.

It had a target.

What kept him awake was something much worse.

Confusion.

For two years, he had shared a home, a bed, and a life with Claire Whitmore.

He had believed he knew her.

He had believed he understood the woman beside him.

But now every memory had a shadow behind it.

Every smile had a question.

Every kindness had a hidden motive.

And the most terrifying part was not discovering that Claire had secrets.

Everyone had secrets.

The terrifying part was realizing that he had spent years protecting someone who might have been the danger.

At 5:30 in the morning, Nathan found his mother sitting alone in the kitchen.

The mansion was quiet.

The staff had not arrived yet.

The sunrise outside painted the windows with pale orange light.

Eleanor sat at the table holding a cup of tea she had not touched.

She looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like someone who had carried a heavy stone for too many years and had finally put it down.

Nathan stood in the doorway.

“Mom.”

She looked up.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Eleanor smiled sadly.

“You look just like your father when you’re angry.”

Nathan walked inside.

“I don’t want to look like him.”

The words hurt her.

He saw it.

Immediately, he regretted saying them.

But he was too wounded to take them back.

“I’m sorry.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No. You have every right.”

Nathan sat across from her.

“I need the truth.”

She nodded slowly.

“I know.”

“All of it.”

Another nod.

“All right.”

She took a deep breath.

“Where do you want me to start?”

Nathan looked at the table.

“Start with Amelia.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

The name still carried pain.

“Amelia Carter was the kindest person I ever knew.”

Nathan listened.

“She wasn’t like your father.”

His jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your father was charming. Brilliant. Powerful.”

She looked down.

“But power can make people believe they deserve whatever they want.”

Nathan said nothing.

“Your father met Amelia when he was young. Before Whitmore Development became what it is today. Before the money. Before the reputation.”

Eleanor’s fingers moved slowly around the tea cup.

“She loved him before anyone knew his name.”

“And then?”

“And then he changed.”

The answer was quiet.

But heavy.

Nathan looked at her.

“Did he hurt her?”

Eleanor hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Mom.”

“I don’t know everything.”

“You know something.”

She looked toward the window.

“I know that Amelia discovered something about your father’s business.”

“What?”

“A mistake.”

Nathan frowned.

“What kind of mistake?”

“A dangerous one.”

The kitchen became silent.

“Your father was involved with people he should never have trusted.”

Nathan immediately thought of Claire.

Her family.

Her mother.

Victoria Hale.

“Was Claire’s family involved?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Yes.”

The word landed like a blow.

“How?”

“Victoria Hale was your father’s financial advisor.”

Nathan froze.

“My father’s advisor?”

“Yes.”

“How did I never know this?”

“Because after Amelia disappeared, your father removed every record connected to her.”

Nathan stared.

“He erased her.”

Eleanor nodded.

“And everyone who knew the truth stayed silent.”

Nathan felt sick.

“Including you.”

The accusation hurt her.

But she accepted it.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid.”

Nathan looked away.

He wanted to understand.

But part of him was furious.

“You let me grow up believing everything was perfect.”

“No.”

Eleanor’s voice became stronger.

“I let you grow up believing you were safe.”

Nathan looked back.

She continued.

“When Amelia disappeared, I tried to find her.”

“You did?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“I was warned.”

“By who?”

Eleanor’s hands trembled.

“Your father.”

Nathan went still.

“What did he say?”

She swallowed.

“He told me that if I kept searching, I would lose you too.”

The words were almost impossible to hear.

Nathan stared at his mother.

“He threatened his own son?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“He threatened a mother.”

An hour later, Nathan sat in his office with Daniel Cross.

The investigation had grown larger.

Much larger.

“Find Amelia,” Nathan said.

Daniel looked serious.

“We’re trying.”

“No.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“I don’t want trying.”

His voice was firm.

“I want answers.”

Daniel nodded.

“There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“We found something about Claire.”

Nathan looked up.

Daniel opened another file.

“Before she married you, Claire worked with your father’s old company.”

Nathan frowned.

“She told me she had nothing to do with Whitmore Development.”

“She didn’t work directly for the company.”

Daniel placed a document down.

“She worked for Victoria Hale.”

Nathan looked at the paper.

A list of employees.

Financial records.

Dates.

Claire’s name.

“She knew about my family before she met me.”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what it appears.”

Nathan leaned back.

A painful realization formed.

Claire had not entered his life by accident.

She had studied him.

Approached him.

Built trust.

Everything suddenly felt calculated.

The first dinner.

The charity events.

The way she comforted him after his father died.

Was any of it real?

Meanwhile, across town, Claire Whitmore stood in front of a mirror.

She had removed her makeup.

Removed her jewelry.

Removed the perfect image she showed the world.

Without it, she looked different.

Younger.

But somehow more dangerous.

A woman entered the room.

Older.

Elegant.

Cold.

Victoria Hale.

Claire’s mother.

“You should have stopped this years ago.”

Claire turned.

“I tried.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“No. You controlled it.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“But control is not the same as destroying evidence.”

Claire’s hands tightened.

“You told me Amelia was gone.”

“She was.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“You told me Sofia was gone too.”

Victoria became silent.

That silence answered everything.

Claire stepped closer.

“She’s alive.”

Victoria looked away.

“You always were too emotional.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“I need the truth.”

“You cannot handle the truth.”

“I destroyed my marriage for you.”

Victoria looked at her.

“You destroyed your marriage because you wanted power.”

The words cut.

Claire looked away.

For the first time, she looked less like a villain and more like someone trapped.

“I wanted what was mine.”

Victoria smiled.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The real reason.”

Claire whispered:

“I was always second.”

Victoria’s expression changed slightly.

“To who?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“To Sofia.”

That evening, Nathan returned home earlier than expected.

The mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

He found Eleanor in the library.

She was holding another photograph.

Not the old one.

A new one.

Nathan stopped.

“Mom?”

She looked up.

“I need to show you something.”

She handed it to him.

Nathan stared.

The picture showed a woman standing outside a small bookstore.

Older.

Different.

But familiar.

His heart stopped.

Because he knew those eyes.

Those eyes looked exactly like the baby in the photograph.

“Who is she?”

Eleanor whispered:

“Amelia.”

Nathan looked at her.

Impossible.

His father’s first wife.

The woman everyone believed had disappeared.

Alive.

Older.

Still here.

“How?”

Eleanor took a shaky breath.

“Because she came to me three months ago.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

“She found me.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because she was afraid.”

“Of what?”

Eleanor looked toward the doorway.

At the mansion.

At the life they had built.

“She was afraid of Claire.”

Nathan’s chest tightened.

“What did Amelia tell you?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“She told me Sofia was not the only child Victoria Hale raised.”

Nathan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor whispered:

“It means Claire has been searching for something.”

“What?”

“The inheritance your father hid.”

Nathan stared.

“What inheritance?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“The truth about who really owns Whitmore Development.”

The room went silent.

Nathan felt the world shift again.

His father’s secrets.

Claire’s lies.

Amelia’s disappearance.

The missing ring.

Everything was connected.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Nathan answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

Older.

Shaking.

“Is this Nathan Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Amelia Carter.”

Nathan stopped breathing.

“I know who you are.”

The woman became silent.

Then she whispered:

“Your wife knows I’m alive.”

Nathan looked toward the hallway.

“Where are you?”

Another pause.

“I’m close.”

“Tell me where.”

But Amelia’s voice suddenly became frightened.

“Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something.”

“What?”

Her next words froze him.

“Your father didn’t abandon me.”

Nathan’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Then what happened?”

Amelia whispered:

“He tried to have me killed.”

The call ended.

Nathan stood motionless.

May you like

Because the secret buried for decades had finally started to rise.

And it was darker than anyone imagined.
