Chapter 10 - The Moon Keeps Watch

Six months later, the dark clouds that had hung over Blackwell House for two years had completely vanished, replaced by the bright, warm sunshine of a Chicago summer.

The grand estate had been completely renovated. The high security fences remained, but the oppressive atmosphere was gone. The gardens were blooming with vibrant blue hydrangeas, Eleanor’s favorite flowers, and the sound of laughter echoed through the open windows.

A massive celebration was underway on the back lawn. The entire Blackwell syndicate was present, not to plan a war, but to celebrate a rebirth. Arthur Vance and his co-conspirators were locked away in a maximum-security federal facility, their names completely erased from the city’s ledger.

Holden stood on the terrace, wearing a casual linen shirt instead of his usual intimidating suits. He looked healthier, the lines of stress around his eyes softened by peace. He held a glass of fine champagne, watching his daughter.

Wren was running through the grass, her dark hair flying behind her, her white dress immaculate. She was laughing—a loud, beautiful, uninhibited sound. She stopped by a grand piano that had been set up on the lawn, where Clara sat, looking elegant in a beautiful navy blue dress that Holden had commissioned for her.

Clara was no longer a maid. She was the director of the newly established Eleanor Blackwell Foundation, a multi-million dollar charity dedicated to providing safe housing, medical care, and legal protection for vulnerable women and children across the state. She had her own beautiful apartment on the estate grounds and a lifetime salary that ensured she would never know poverty again.

Eleanor stepped out onto the terrace, wrapping her arms around Holden’s waist from behind, resting her head against his back. “What are you thinking about, my love?” she asked softly.

Holden turned around, pulling her into his arms and kissing her forehead. “I’m thinking about how close we came to total darkness. And how a single, quiet song saved us all.”

Down on the lawn, Clara began to play a soft, beautiful melody on the piano. Wren stood beside her, her raspy but sweet voice joining in, singing the words clearly for the entire world to hear:

“When the night gets cold and the brave ones cry, look for the moon in your window sky. The shadows will fade, the doors will unlock, for love is the key that rewinds the clock.”

Holden, Eleanor, and Clara looked at each other across the beautiful garden, knowing that the ghosts of the past were finally gone. The Blackwell family was whole, the city was at peace, and the moon would always keep watch over their home.
