CHAPTER 7 – The Convergence War

The first sign that something was wrong was not noise.

It was absence.

At 6:00 a.m., Amelia woke to find the facility too quiet.

No hallway footsteps.

No distant mechanical hum of simulation rooms.

Even the subtle vibration of the air systems felt reduced, like the building was holding its breath.

Rosie stirred in her crib, unsettled.

Amelia sat up immediately.

Something had changed.

And in a place like this, change never happened without cause.

The wall monitor turned on by itself.

No greeting.

No module title.

Just a single line:

SYSTEM STABILITY EVENT: CONVERGENCE PROTOCOL INITIATED

Amelia frowned.

“Convergence?”

The system did not respond.

Instead, the screen split into three panels.

Three separate live feeds.

Three separate rooms.

Three groups of people.

All wearing the same blank, controlled expressions she had begun to recognize.

Whitaker was among them in one feed.

Roman Vane was not visible.

Which meant he didn’t need to be.

A knock came at the door.

Amelia didn’t move immediately.

“Dr. Whitaker?” she called.

No answer.

The knock repeated.

Three times.

Then stopped.

The door opened anyway.

A man she had never seen before stood there.

No badge.

No uniform.

Only a black wrist device blinking faintly.

“Participant Carter,” he said.

Amelia stood slowly.

“What is happening?”

The man didn’t answer her question.

Instead:

“You are required in Observation Chamber Three.”

Amelia tightened her hold on Rosie.

“I’m not leaving her.”

The man glanced at the child.

Then back to Amelia.

“Understood.”

A pause.

“Bring her.”

That was new.

The corridor outside was no longer neutral.

It was active.

People moved quickly now.

Not panicked.

Directed.

The difference mattered.

Amelia noticed immediately.

This was not chaos.

This was execution of protocol.

As they walked, Amelia saw doors open that she had never seen open before.

Inside them, groups of staff stood around glowing interfaces.

Maps of legal systems.

Corporate networks.

Judicial pipelines.

All flickering with updates faster than human input should allow.

Amelia turned slightly.

“What is Convergence Protocol?”

The escort finally answered.

“System reconciliation event.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means conflicting models are now resolving.”

Amelia frowned.

“Conflicting models of what?”

The man looked at her briefly.

“Legal control architecture.”

They stopped in front of a reinforced glass chamber.

Inside, multiple screens surrounded a central table.

Dr. Whitaker was already there.

So was a woman Amelia recognized
