Chapter 2 – “The Monster Who Protected Her”

The question remained hanging between them.
Not loud.
Not angry.
But somehow more terrifying than a scream.
“Who are you really, and why are you so afraid of me?”
Elena Cross froze.
For years, she had survived by mastering one simple rule:
Never reveal the truth.
Not to strangers.
Not to friends.
Not even to herself.
The truth was a weapon.
And weapons were dangerous when they fell into the wrong hands.
Especially hands like Damian Vale’s.
The man standing in front of her was not just a wealthy businessman.
Not just the owner of Blackthorne Estate.
Everyone in the city knew his name.
They lowered their voices when they spoke about him.
They avoided his path.
They whispered stories about the man who built an empire from nothing and destroyed anyone who tried to take it from him.
Some called him ruthless.
Some called him heartless.
Others called him a monster.
And Elena believed them.
Because monsters recognized fear.
And Damian Vale had seen hers.
Her fingers tightened around the papers in her hands.
“I’m not afraid of you.”
The lie came automatically.
Smooth.
Practiced.
Almost convincing.
Almost.
Damian’s eyes narrowed.
It was the first time Elena realized something dangerous about him.
He didn't just listen to words.
He studied the space between them.
The hesitation.
The breath before a sentence.
The movement of a hand.
The things people couldn't control.
“You’re lying.”
Her heart stopped for half a second.
She forced herself to stand.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like a frightened animal pretending it wasn't wounded.
“I apologize for causing the accident, Mr. Vale. It won’t happen again.”
She reached for the remaining files.
A mistake.
The moment her fingers touched the papers, Damian noticed.
Her hand was trembling.
Not slightly.
Violently.
Yet she was forcing it still.
That fascinated him.
Most people trembled because they were afraid of him.
They begged.
They apologized.
They tried to impress him.
Elena was different.
She wasn't trying to win his approval.
She was trying to disappear.
And that was something Damian Vale understood.
Because he had spent most of his life doing the same thing.
Just in a different way.
“Look at me.”
The command was quiet.
But Elena reacted instantly.
Her shoulders tightened.
Her breathing changed.
Damian noticed.
Again.
A small reaction.
But enough.
He had spent years reading enemies across negotiation tables.
A person's body always confessed before their mouth did.
Elena wasn't afraid of punishment.
She was afraid of being touched.
That realization bothered him more than he expected.
“Who hurt you?”
The question escaped before he could stop it.
Elena’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Damian saw it.
Pain.
Memory.
Fear.
Then the wall returned.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“You do.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
The silence between them grew heavier.
Elena lowered her eyes.
“Mr. Vale, with all due respect, I am just an employee.”
Damian looked at her.
An employee.
That was what she wanted him to believe.
But he had learned something important during his years in the criminal world.
The people who claimed to be ordinary were usually hiding the most extraordinary secrets.
“You know how to move through a room without making sound.”
Elena said nothing.
“You notice exits before furniture.”
Her expression changed slightly.
“You track people's footsteps.”
Silence.
“You sleep with your back against walls.”
Her breath caught.
Damian stepped closer.
Not aggressively.
Not threateningly.
Just enough to confirm his suspicion.
“You’re not a maid.”
Elena looked up.
And for the first time, Damian saw something besides fear.
Defiance.
“I never said I was anything else.”
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Before Damian could respond, a voice echoed from the end of the corridor.
“Boss?”
Both of them turned.
Marcus Reed stood near the entrance.
Damian’s most trusted security chief.
A man who had worked beside him for fifteen years.
Marcus immediately noticed the scene.
The scattered files.
Elena standing too close.
Damian looking unusually interested.
His eyebrow lifted.
“Everything alright?”
Damian didn't answer immediately.
His attention remained on Elena.
“She’s assigned to the east wing.”
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who approved her background check?”
A pause.
Small.
But noticeable.
Damian turned.
“Marcus.”
His friend’s expression hardened.
“I’ll look into it.”
“No.”
Damian’s voice became colder.
“I’ll do it myself.”
Elena felt a chill.
That was worse.
Much worse.
A man like Damian investigating her meant only one thing.
Her past was coming.
And when the past arrived...
It never came alone.
That night, Elena couldn't sleep.
The room provided for servants was small.
Clean.
Simple.
Safe.
At least, it was supposed to be.
But safety was a concept she had stopped believing in years ago.
She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the old scar on her wrist.
A reminder.
A warning.
A piece of a life she had buried.
She had escaped once.
She had changed her name.
Changed her appearance.
Changed everything.
Elena Cross wasn't the girl she used to be.
She had made sure of that.
But Damian Vale had looked at her for less than ten minutes and almost uncovered everything.
That terrified her.
Because Damian wasn't just powerful.
He was intelligent.
And intelligent men were dangerous.
Especially when they became curious.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
Her entire body reacted.
Instantly.
She stood.
Silent.
Still.
Listening.
The knock came again.
Three times.
Slow.
Controlled.
Not a servant.
Not security.
Her instincts screamed.
She moved toward the small kitchen knife hidden beneath the mattress.
Another habit from another life.
“Miss Cross.”
The voice made her freeze.
Damian.
She lowered the knife slightly.
Why was he here?
At midnight?
She opened the door only a few inches.
Damian stood outside.
Alone.
No guards.
No intimidation.
Just him.
“What do you want?”
It was the first time she had spoken to him without pretending.
Damian noticed.
“You sound different when you're not afraid.”
Elena’s grip tightened.
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I suppose it isn’t.”
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Damian held out a folder.
Her folder.
Her blood ran cold.
“Where did you get that?”
“My security team found inconsistencies.”
Elena didn't take it.
“Give it back.”
“No.”
Her eyes flashed.
“You have no right.”
“You’re correct.”
His answer surprised her.
“I don’t.”
A mafia boss admitting he was wrong?
Impossible.
“I also know someone erased parts of your history.”
Elena went silent.
Damian continued.
“Your employment records are fake.”
Her breathing became shallow.
“Your previous address doesn’t exist.”
A pause.
“Your references are all connected to the same organization.”
Elena’s face went pale.
“You investigated me.”
“Yes.”
“At least you admit it.”
“I don't lie.”
A bitter smile appeared on her lips.
“People like you always say that.”
“People like me?”
“The kind who think money gives them permission to own everyone around them.”
Something changed in Damian’s expression.
Not anger.
Something closer to recognition.
“You think I’m like him.”
Elena froze.
The folder slipped slightly in his hand.
“What did you say?”
Damian watched her carefully.
“You looked at me today like you were seeing someone else.”
Her face drained of color.
“You don't know anything about me.”
“No.”
His voice softened.
“But I know what fear looks like.”
That sentence hit harder than anything else.
Because she realized something.
Damian wasn't mocking her.
He wasn't judging her.
He understood.
And that frightened her more.
“Why do you care?”
The question escaped.
Damian looked away briefly.
A rare crack in his perfect control.
“Because I know what it's like when everyone sees the damage but no one asks who caused it.”
Elena stared at him.
For the first time...
She saw something beneath the monster.
A wound.
Hidden.
Buried.
Protected by years of anger.
“You’re not what people say you are.”
Damian looked back at her.
“And what do people say?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“That you’re a monster.”
A strange silence followed.
Then Damian gave a quiet, humorless laugh.
“Maybe they’re right.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
The word surprised both of them.
She continued softly.
“Monsters don't ask who hurt someone.”
Damian studied her.
Something shifted.
Something neither of them wanted to admit.
Because in that moment...
The most feared man in the city realized something dangerous.
Elena Cross wasn't afraid of him anymore.
Not completely.
And Elena realized something even more dangerous.
Damian Vale might be the first person who didn't want to use her pain against her.
The next morning, everything changed.
Because someone came looking for Elena.
Someone from her past.
Someone who knew her real name.
And when the Blackthorne security cameras captured the stranger standing outside the gates...
Damian Vale recognized him immediately.
His expression turned cold.
Because the man on the screen wasn't just an enemy.
He was the one person Damian had spent ten years trying to destroy.
Victor Cross.
Elena’s father.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
And the man who had just sent Damian one message:
“I know you have my daughter.”
Damian stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked toward the east wing.
Toward Elena.
For the first time in years...
Damian Vale felt something stronger than anger.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For her.
Because if Victor Cross had found Elena...
The nightmare she escaped from was coming back.
May you like
And this time...
It would come armed.
