Chapter 9 - The Dawn after the Storm

The explosion rocked the Watchung Mountains, a pillar of fire rising into the rainy night sky as the Moretti manor collapsed inward on itself, burying the blood, the betrayals, and the sins of the Five Families beneath thousands of tons of stone and blazing timber.

When the sun broke over the horizon twelve hours later, the rain had finally stopped.

A sleek black car glided silently through the green, rolling hills of rural Vermont, pulling up to a charming white farmhouse surrounded by ancient oak trees, blooming wildflowers, and a view of a crystal-clear mountain lake.

The car door opened automatically.

Mia stepped out onto the lush grass, holding her small leather bag and clutching her mother's silver locket tightly in her palm. The antique watch on her wrist ticked steadily, a quiet, rhythmic pulse against her skin.

Standing on the porch of the farmhouse was an older woman with a kind, gentle face, wrapped in a warm wool shawl—Dr. Rossi’s sister, a retired teacher who ran an private sanctuary for orphaned children.

"Welcome home, Mia," the woman said softly, walking down the wooden steps with open arms.

Mia looked back at the long, quiet road, then up at the clear blue sky. For the first time in three months, she didn't feel cold. She didn't feel alone. She felt the heavy, protective embrace of two ghosts standing guard over her life—a mother who had hidden her in the light, and a grandfather who had died to keep her there.

She took a deep breath, walked up the porch steps, and took the woman's hand.
