Chapter 6 - The Return of the King

On Friday morning, the grand boardroom on the 42nd floor of Caldwell Tower was packed to capacity.

Twelve board members, dressed in dark tailored suits, sat around the forty-foot mahogany table. Richard Caldwell stood at the head of the table, presenting a slide show displaying Ethan’s recent absence, the plummeting stock projections caused by rumor market volatility, and photos of the South Loop alleyway.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard declared, his voice filled with theatrical solemnity. "Our CEO, Ethan Caldwell, has abandoned his duties during the most critical financial quarter of the decade. He has compromised the company's reputation by bringing an undocumented street child and a destitute woman into our corporate healthcare facilities."

A few older board members whispered among themselves, looking uncomfortable.

"Ethan’s father built this empire on discipline and order," Richard continued, leaning his hands on the table. "Ethan has shown that he no longer possesses the emotional fortitude to lead Caldwell Industries. Therefore, I motion for an immediate vote of no-confidence to remove him as Chief Executive Officer!"

"Seconded," Julian Sterling spoke up firmly from the far end of the table.

"All those in favor—" Richard began, a triumphant grin beginning to form on his lips.

BANG.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom flew open, slamming against the marble walls with the force of a thunderclap.

The room went dead silent.

Ethan Caldwell stepped into the boardroom.

He looked magnificent. He wore a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, a dark red silk tie, and a gold pocket watch. His posture was imposing, his presence radiating an overwhelming, lethal authority that made every single board member instantly sit up straight.

Beside him walked Marcus, carrying a thick leather briefcase.

And beside Marcus, holding Ethan’s left hand, was Lily.

She was dressed in a pristine navy blue velvet dress with a white lace collar, black leather shoes, and her blond hair tied neatly with a silk ribbon. Her violet-gray eyes scanned the room full of powerful executives without a single trace of fear.

"Am I late for the vote, Uncle Richard?" Ethan asked, his voice smooth as silk and cold as winter ice.

Richard’s face went pale. "Ethan... this is a private board meeting! You cannot bring a child in here!"

Ethan walked slowly down the length of the table, his dark dress shoes clicking firmly against the hardwood floor. He didn't stop until he stood directly at the head of the table, right next to Richard. He placed his broad hand gently on Lily’s shoulder.

"This is not just a child, Richard," Ethan said, his voice echoing in the dead quiet room. "This is Lily Caldwell. My daughter. The legitimate heir to the Caldwell family estate."

Gasps rippled across the boardroom.

Julian Sterling stood up angrily. "This is absurd! You can't just walk in here with a street kid and claim she's a Caldwell without proof!"

Ethan signaled to Marcus.

Marcus opened his briefcase, pulled out twelve leather-bound folders, and slid them down both sides of the long table.

"Inside those folders," Ethan stated calmly, "you will find a certified DNA paternity test from the Johns Hopkins Genetics Institute, confirming a ninety-nine point nine percent match. You will also find a clean medical report confirming her full health, and a legal decree of parentage filed with the Cook County Circuit Court two hours ago."

Richard’s hands began to shake as he opened the folder in front of him.

"Furthermore," Ethan continued, leaning down and fixing his uncle with a gaze so dark it made the older man take a step back. "You will find a forensic financial audit of Richard Caldwell’s personal offshore accounts in Panama. An audit that proves he has been siphoning off seven million dollars annually from our logistics division for the past five years."

The boardroom exploded into absolute chaos!

"What?!" one of the senior board members yelled, slamming his fist on the table. "Richard, is this true?!"

Richard collapsed back into his leather chair, his face turning the color of ash. "Ethan... wait... let's talk about this privately—"

"There is nothing to talk about," Ethan interrupted smoothly. "Marcus, the Chicago Police Department and federal inspectors are waiting downstairs in the lobby. Escort my uncle out of the building."

Two armed security guards walked into the room, grabbing Richard by his arms and lifting him from his chair. As he was dragged away, screaming insults, Ethan turned his gaze toward Julian Sterling.

"And as for the Sterling Financial Group," Ethan announced coldly, "Caldwell Industries is terminating all joint ventures immediately. You have twenty-four hours to liquidate your holdings in our subsidiary stocks."

Julian stared at Ethan in utter shock, realized he was completely defeated, snatched his briefcase, and rushed out of the room without uttering another word.

Ethan looked around the table at the remaining board members. "Are there any further motions regarding my leadership?"

May you like

Silence filled the room. Not a single person dared to raise a finger.

Ethan looked down at Lily, a soft, warm smile breaking through his stern demeanor. "Meeting adjourned."
