Chapter 6 - Beneath the Floorboards

The doors of the service elevator slid open with a heavy, grinding groan, revealing a subterranean hallway wrapped in deep shadows and the thick, humid scent of rust and damp concrete. Exposed pipes hissed along the low ceiling, dripping condensation onto the cracked floor below.

This was the old infrastructure of Whitman Memorial Hospital—the part of the building that had been abandoned and sealed off decades ago, long before the modern glass wings and high-tech surgical suites were built above.

"Move," Nurse Henderson ordered, pushing the incubator forward into the gloom.

"You're out of your mind," Maya panted, her hand pressed against her aching abdomen as she followed them down the damp corridor. "If you hurt my baby—"

"No one is hurting the child," a deep voice echoed from the shadows ahead.

A man stepped out from beneath a flickering overhead sodium light. It was Julian Vance. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored suit; he wore a heavy black work jacket, his face grim and shadowed, his eyes fixed on Maya with an intensity that borderlined on unhinged.

"Julian," Maya breathed, stopping in her tracks. "What is this? Where is your grandmother?"

"Grandma is resting in a private suite upstairs," Julian said coldly, walking over to the incubator and looking down at little Lily with a strange, unreadable expression. "The real question is, Maya... what were you doing digging into my family's foundation records?"

Maya stared at him, her mind racing. "Leo."

"My cousin has a bad habit of looking into things that don't concern him," Julian said, nodding toward the far corner of the subterranean room.

From the shadows, two security guards dragged a bound and gagged Leo Vance out into the light. Leo’s lip was split, and a purple bruise was forming along his jawline, but his eyes blazed with defiance as he looked at Maya and shook his head frantically.

"Julian, you're insane," Maya said, taking a step backward toward the elevator doors, only to find they had already closed and locked automatically. "You can't just kidnap us! This is a federal hospital!"

"This hospital bears my family's name," Julian said, his voice rising, echoing off the concrete walls. "My grandfather built this institution brick by brick. When your father—that arrogant mechanic—threatened to ruin our reputation eighteen years ago with his little safety crusade about faulty equipment, my grandfather handled it. And when you started sniffing around the exact same files, trying to pin a broken bed on us..." Julian stepped closer, his face twisting in rage. "...we had to make sure you understood who you were dealing with."

"My father didn't have an accident, did he?" Maya asked, her voice trembling not with fear, but with a cold, blinding fury that eclipsed her physical pain. "Your grandfather killed him."

Julian didn't answer directly, but the grim, silent smile on his face was all the confirmation Maya needed.

"He found out the board was pocketing the safety upgrade funds and buying substandard parts," Maya said, her eyes locked on Julian’s. "Just like they did with the bed in the west wing. Just like they're doing now."

"And now history repeats itself," Julian said, gesturing to the two security guards. "Take the baby. Put her in the second car outside. We're taking a little trip across state lines. As for Mrs. Torres and her whistleblower cousin... they're going to have an unfortunate accident in the old boiler room."

One of the guards lunged toward the incubator.

That was the moment Maya moved.

All the pain from her C-section, all the exhaustion from the sleepless nights, all the terror of the past forty-eight hours evaporated, replaced by a primal, terrifying maternal rage. She didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, grabbing a heavy metal wrench off a nearby maintenance workbench and bringing it down with a sickening crack against the nearest guard's shoulder.

The guard yelled out in pain, stumbling backward.

"Run, Leo!" Maya screamed, kicking the second guard behind the knee as he reached for her.

Leo, fueled by adrenaline, slammed his shoulder into the guard holding his bonds, snapping the cheap plastic zip-ties against a sharp metal bracket on the wall. He grabbed a heavy iron pipe off the rack and swung it wide, clearing their path toward the emergency exit stairs at the far end of the subterranean corridor.

May you like

"Get them!" Julian roared, scrambling back as Maya swung the wrench toward him, missing his face by inches.

Maya didn't look back. She grabbed the rolling incubator with one hand, her fingers locked around the handle, and sprinted into the dark, echoing stairwell behind Leo, leaving the shadows of the past far behind them as they raced upward toward the light.
