Chapter 5 - The Raid Under the Expressway

The rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a thick, choking fog that clung to the industrial wasteland beneath the expressway overpass.

Three unmarked black SUVs and two police cruisers crept down the gravel alleyway without their headlights, their engines humming quietly in the damp night air.

Inside the lead vehicle, Clara clutched Julian’s hand so tightly her knuckles were white. Julian sat in the middle row between Clara and Richard, his eyes wide and fixed on the windshield as the looming silhouette of the red brick warehouse came into view.

"Is this the place?" Richard asked softly, his hand resting on the back of Julian’s seat.

Julian nodded mutely, a shiver running through him. "The... the red door with the yellow chain. That’s where the guard sits."

Detective Vance sat in the front passenger seat, checking the magazine of his sidearm with a sharp click. He turned around, his expression grim. "Listen to me, folks. We breach in sixty seconds. SWAT is handling the front, but my team and I are taking the rear basement access Julian described. Once we go in, stay behind us. Do not touch anything, and do not lose sight of me."

"Just get my son's friends out of there," Clara whispered fiercely.

"Move out," Vance ordered into his radio.

The doors of the SUVs clicked open simultaneously. The tactical team—eight officers in heavy ceramic plate carriers and night-vision goggles—poured out into the fog, moving with terrifying, silent efficiency toward the rear of the warehouse.

Clara, Richard, and Julian followed closely behind the rear security detail.

They reached a heavy iron door set into the concrete foundation of the building. A thick rusted chain wrapped around the iron handles, secured by a padlock the size of a fist.

Detective Vance signaled to the breach specialist, who stepped up with a heavy hydraulic bolt cutter. With a single, powerful squeeze, the steel jaws severed the padlock. The chain dropped to the concrete with a dull clatter.

The door swung inward, releasing a wave of stagnant air that smelled of mold, unwashed bodies, and old fear.

"Clear," whispered the lead officer, stepping inside with his flashlight beam cutting through the darkness.

Clara held Julian’s hand tighter as they crossed the threshold. The basement was a labyrinth of concrete pillars, rusted pipes, and makeshift wooden stalls divided by chicken wire.

As their eyes adjusted to the dim emergency lighting, gasps echoed softly down the corridor.

In the stalls, huddled together under thin wool blankets, were half a dozen children. Some were teenagers, others as young as five. They stared at the armed police officers with wide, uncomprehending eyes, too terrified to move or cry out.

"It’s okay," Clara called out, her voice breaking as tears streamed down her face. "You’re safe now. The police are here."

A small girl with tangled blonde hair poked her head out from behind a wooden crate. She looked at Julian, standing beside Clara.

"Julian?" she whispered. "You... you came back?"

Julian took a hesitant step forward. "I told you I’d find help, Lily. I told you."

Before the emotional reunion could unfold, a shout echoed from the front of the warehouse.

"Suspects moving! Northwest stairwell! Move, move, move!"

Detective Vance spun around. "Secure these children! Get them to the medical vans outside right now!"

Richard scooped Julian up into his arms, ignoring the boy's surprised gasp, and held him tight against his chest. "I’ve got you, son. I’m not letting you go ever again."

Clara ran beside them as the tactical team escorted the rescued children out into the cool night air. But as they emerged into the fenced courtyard behind the warehouse, a blinding sweep of headlights illuminated the fog.

Standing by a idling black sedan near the perimeter fence was a man with a deep voice and a long, jagged scar running down his right cheek.

The Boss.

And in his hand, he held a pistol pointed directly at Julian’s chest.
