Chapter 4 - The Scramble in the Ruins

The lobby of the Sterling Tower was silent as Aaron stepped out of the private elevator. His legs felt like lead, his mind a chaotic blur of flashing figures, legal terms, and the terrifying realization of his absolute powerlessness.
Jasmine was waiting near the marble fountain, holding a cup of artisan coffee, looking at her phone. When she saw him, she put on her best soothing, sympathetic face and hurried over.
"Oh, Aaron!" she cooed, reaching out to clasp his arm. "How did it go? Did that terrible woman finally listen to reason? Is she stopping the injunction?"
Aaron didn't answer right away. He stared at her—at her pristine designer clothes, her perfectly styled hair, her sweet, helpless demeanor. For the first time, a dark seed of doubt planted itself in his chest.
"She's revoking everything," Aaron muttered, his voice hollow, staring blankly at the glass doors where dozens of news reporters were already gathering outside. "The patents... the credit lines... the housing deeds. It's all gone, Jasmine. Everything."
Jasmine’s eyes flickered—a brief, sharp flash of calculation that vanished as quickly as it came, replaced by dramatic concern.
"That... that's insane!" she gasped, clutching her hands against her chest. "She can't do that! You're the CEO! You're the face of the company! Can't we sue her?"
David Vance, Aaron's lawyer, let out a harsh, bitter laugh as he caught up with them. "Sue her?! David, she owns the ground we stand on! The prenup Aaron signed gives her total asset reclamation rights in the event of default! We don't have the money to pay our legal retainer for next week, let alone sue the Sterling family!"
"There has to be a way out!" Aaron snapped, his panic escalating into wild anger. He grabbed Jasmine’s hand tightly. "We still have the core software code! Jasmine, you have the master backups on the secure drive, right? The ones we were going to demonstrate to the Yamato Group?"
Jasmine flinched slightly, pulling her hand back under the guise of searching her bag.
"I... I have the drives at my apartment, Aaron," she said quickly, her voice slightly strained. "But if the patents are frozen, can we even use them?"
"We don't need the US market!" Aaron said, his eyes glittering with manic desperation as he grabbed onto this last, fragile lifeline. "We can transfer the operation to Asia! Vanguard Technologies offered to buy our secondary core infrastructure last month for two hundred million! If we sell the unpatented source code to them tonight, we can secure enough cash to pay off the immediate personal debts and start over in Singapore!"
Jasmine’s face lit up with a strange, intense focus. "Vanguard? You... you want to sell the code to Vanguard?"
"It's our only choice," Aaron said, completely oblivious to the trap he was walking into. "I'll come to your apartment tonight. We'll pull the master files from the drive, sign the transfer agreement, and fly out to Asia on a commercial flight before Alyssa's lawyers can file a global asset freeze."
"Yes... yes, of course!" Jasmine said quickly, a genuine, triumphant smile spreading across her face. "Come to my apartment at eight o'clock. I'll have everything prepared, Aaron. We'll get through this together."
She leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek, smelling of expensive floral perfume. To Aaron, she felt like the only loyal person left in a world that had suddenly turned dark and hostile.
He didn't notice the quick, coded text message she sent under her bag as she pulled away:
[Target is delivering the master source code to my unit at 20:00. Notify Arthur to prepare the wire transfer to my Cayman account.]
Unbeknownst to both of them, two floors above, in the surveillance monitoring room of Sterling Security, Clara sat watching the high-definition feed of the lobby. She highlighted Jasmine's encrypted phone signal and clicked a button, routing the transmission directly to my private tablet.
I watched the text message translate across my screen while sitting in the back of my car.
"She took the bait," Clara reported through my earpiece. "Aaron is planning to illegally transfer the unpatented source code to Vanguard Technologies tonight at eight."
"Excellent," I said, swirling the dark wine in my crystal glass. "Notify the FBI's Corporate Espionage Division. Tell them we have a live corporate theft in progress involving critical infrastructure tech."

"And Arthur Pendelton?" Clara asked.
"Let Arthur send the money to Jasmine's offshore account first," I commanded softly. "I want Aaron to watch his precious secretary take his final two hundred million dollars, hand the code to his worst enemy, and leave him with nothing but a federal arrest warrant."
