Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Roof

Midnight approached, and the sounds of the gala began to fade into the quiet background hum of the hotel.
Anna and I walked out onto the private roof garden on the forty-fifth floor of the Wellington Grand—the very top of the building, overlooking the breathtaking, endless sea of city lights stretching out toward the horizon.
The cool night air was fresh and invigorating, carrying the faint, distant sounds of the metropolis below.
Anna walked over to the stone balustrade, leaning her arms on the smooth granite, her emerald silk dress fluttering gently in the breeze.
I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist, resting my chin softly against her shoulder. She leaned back against my chest with a deep, content sigh, her hands resting over mine.
"Look at it all," Anna whispered, gazing at the glittering towers of glass and steel. "A year ago, I was standing on a wet sidewalk on 5th Street, looking up at these buildings, feeling like the world was a giant, cold machine designed to crush people like me."
"And now?" I asked, kissing her neck softly.
"And now," she turned in my arms, looking up into my eyes with a deep, unshakeable devotion, "I know that even in the coldest city, there are people who care. There are people who build sanctuaries."
I reached into my inner jacket pocket, my heart beating with a sudden, nervous intensity that no corporate acquisition had ever produced.
I pulled out a small, navy velvet box.
Anna’s breath caught in her throat. Her hands flew to her lips as she looked from the box to my face.
"Julian..." she whispered, her eyes brimming with sudden, joyful tears.
I didn't drop to one knee. Instead, I held the box between us, holding her gaze with absolute clarity, devotion, and truth.
I opened the box. Inside rested a timeless platinum ring set with a brilliant, flawless emerald surrounded by two delicate round diamonds—symbolizing Samuel and Sophia.
"Anna," I said, my voice rich with deep, honest emotion. "A year ago, you walked into my suite looking for a safe place to protect your children for one night. You ended up saving my soul."
A tear slipped down her cheek, glistening like a diamond in the moonlight.
"I don't offer you a life without storms," I continued softly, slipping the ring from its velvet resting place. "But I promise you that as long as I live, you and your children will never stand in the cold again. You will always have a home. You will always have my protection. And you will always have my heart."
I looked into her eyes.
"Will you marry me, Anna?"
She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," she choked out through a laugh and a sob, throwing her arms around my neck and pulling me close. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"

I slipped the emerald ring onto her finger, framing her face in my hands, and pulled her into a long, deep, passionate kiss beneath the starry autumn sky.
Below us, the city glittered like a million diamonds—a city that had once been a cold, unyielding battlefield, but had now become our sanctuary.
