Chapter 8 - The Ashes of the Past

Six months after the trial ended, the Sterling estate in Westchester was put up for public auction.
Emily decided she did not want a single brick of that gilded prison left in her life. She directed the auction proceeds to be donated entirely to the Arthur Vance Foundation for Medical Ethics, a non-profit organization she established to protect clinical trial subjects and support victims of domestic financial abuse.
On a cool, crisp morning in October, Emily stood on the grassy hill overlooking the old estate grounds.
Beside her stood Maria, dressed in a warm beige coat, holding a cup of hot coffee.
Below them, heavy demolition machinery was at work. A massive steel wrecking ball swung through the air, crashing into the stone walls of the master suite, shattering the high plaster ceilings and bringing the grand marble columns down in a cloud of white dust.
"Does it hurt to see it fall?" Maria asked softly, taking a sip of her coffee.
Emily shook her head, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips. "No. That house was built on secrets and poison, Maria. It needed to come down."
"What will you build here?"
"A public park," Emily replied, looking out over the autumn trees. "A place with open trees, fresh air, and no walls."
Emily turned to Maria, reaching out to hand her a thick leather folder.
Maria looked at the folder nervously. "What is this, Miss Emily?"
"It’s the deed to a three-bedroom house in San Diego," Emily said warmly. "And a trust fund for your daughter's college education. You saved my life, Maria. You broke open that box when everyone else was standing around weeping false tears. I will never be able to repay you, but I can make sure you never have to work a broom again."

Tears welling in her eyes, Maria pulled Emily into a tight, fierce hug. "Thank you... thank you, Emily..."
"No," Emily whispered, hugging her back tightly. "Thank you for wielding that crowbar."
