Chapter 6 - Escape Under Cover of Darkness

The hospital corridors at 2:00 AM were a maze of sterile white walls, flickering fluorescent lights, and the distant, muffled sounds of rolling supply carts.
I clutched my heavy winter coat around my shoulders, the oversized blue scrubs Chloe had smuggled in feeling entirely too thin against the biting chill of the Chicago night. In my arms, wrapped snugly in a thick thermal blanket, baby Julian let out a tiny soft sigh, his warm weight pressing against my chest as if reminding me exactly what we were fighting for.
"Keep your head down and hood up," Chloe whispered, pushing the empty wheelchair behind me with practiced calm. "We're just a nurse and a patient heading down to the ground-floor pharmacy for medication restock. Act natural."
A few yards ahead, Dr. Michael Hart led the way, his white lab coat unbuttoned, clutching a clipboard to his chest as he chatted smoothly with a night-shift security guard stationed near the elevator bank.
"Evening, Dr. Hart," the guard nodded, yawning behind his hand. "Working late again?"
"Always, Miller," Michael replied without missing a beat, his voice steady and professional. "Just overseeing a priority transfer out to the Northside lab. Inventory emergency reagents. You boys keep up the good work."
"Will do, Doc."
The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. We stepped inside, and the moment the heavy doors closed, sealing us off from the rest of the ward, I let out a breath I felt like I'd been holding for hours.
"First hurdle cleared," Chloe whispered, her hands gripping the handles of the wheelchair so tightly her knuckles were white. "Parking garage level three. My car is parked right by the service exit."
When the elevator reached the basement garage, the damp, exhaust-stained air hit us instantly. The underground parking structure was cavernous and dim, casting long, eerie shadows between rows of parked sedans and SUVs.
We hurried toward a beat-up silver Honda Civic parked in a secluded corner near the stairwell.
As Chloe unlocked the doors, Michael turned to us, his expression grave. He reached into his coat pocket and handed me a heavy brass key and a slim, encrypted burner phone.
"Take my off-grid cabin keys," Michael said softly. "It's about twenty miles outside of Sturgeon Bay. No one goes there this time of year. Use the burner phone to call me only when you're safe. I'll stay behind to manage the fallout at the hospital and stall my father's legal team for as long as humanly possible."
"Michael, come with us," I urged, looking up at him with genuine gratitude. "If Arthur finds out you helped us escape, he'll destroy you too."
"I'm already ruined in his eyes, Clara," Michael smiled faintly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of baby Julian's blanket. "Besides, someone has to stay here and find out what really happened to my brother. I'm going to tear Hart Pharmaceuticals apart from the inside out until I get answers."
I climbed into the passenger seat of the Honda, securing Julian safely in my arms, while Chloe slid behind the steering wheel and turned the ignition. The engine sputtered to life with a loud, rattling roar that echoed off the concrete pillars.

Michael stood back, watching us with a look of profound sorrow and determination, raising his hand in a quiet farewell as Chloe put the car in reverse and sped out of the underground garage into the rainy Chicago night.
We were running. But as we merged onto the empty interstate heading north toward the Wisconsin border, I knew that the war with the Hart dynasty was only just beginning.
