Chapter 8 - New Beginnings

A year after the trial ended, life had blossomed into something remarkably serene and beautiful.
The dark cloud that had hovered over our early relationship was completely gone, replaced by a quiet, deep stability that allowed us to thrive in ways we hadn't thought possible during those chaotic years.
With the state board investigation thoroughly cleared and Jessica’s civil suits settled in our favor, Alex and I both received major promotions at the firm. Richard Sterling retired the following spring, naming Alex and me as junior partners in the restructured corporate auditing division—a testament not only to our professional skill, but to the integrity and fortitude we had shown under extreme pressure.
We decided it was time for a fresh start in every sense of the word.
We sold our home in the city and bought a beautiful, historic farmhouse on the outskirts of Columbus, surrounded by acres of rolling green fields, ancient oak trees, and a sprawling garden that belonged entirely to us. There were no ghosts here, no painful memories of unexpected doorbells or late-night confrontations.
One warm Saturday afternoon in early summer, I stood in our new garden, wiping my hands on my apron as I looked out over the blooming hydrangeas and lavender. The air was filled with the sweet scent of summer and the gentle hum of cicadas in the trees.
Alex walked out onto the back porch holding two glasses of iced tea. He had grown a short, neat beard over the winter, and he looked happier, healthier, and lighter than I had ever seen him.
He walked down the wooden steps, handing me a glass, and wrapped his free arm around my waist, pulling me back against his chest as we looked out over our land.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head.
"I was just thinking about how quiet it is," I murmured, resting my head against his shoulder. "In a good way. In a peaceful way."
"It's going to get a lot less quiet in about six months," Alex said with a soft, warm chuckle.
I smiled, dropping my hand to rest gently over my stomach.
We had found out two weeks earlier that I was pregnant with our first child—a little girl due in late winter. The news had brought tears of pure, unadulterated joy to both of our families, a final, beautiful chapter in a journey that had tested our love in the fires of madness and emerged unbreakable.

"She's going to have a wonderful life here, Alex," I said softly.
"She is," Alex agreed, his voice thick with emotion. "Because she's going to grow up in a home built on real love, real honesty, and real trust."
