Chapter 8 - Crossing the Horizon

The door of the Gulfstream G650 closed with a heavy, pressurized seal, cutting off the noise of the outside world.

Inside, the cabin was an oasis of quiet luxury—soft leather seating, warm wood accents, and the gentle, steady hum of the engines spooling up for takeoff. Through the wide oval windows, the lights of Toluca and the distant, sprawling glow of Mexico City began to twinkle like a fallen constellation against the evening dusk.

Daniel pressed his face against the glass, watching as the aircraft taxied slowly toward the runway. His backpack rested on the seat beside him, and though the crooked zipper on his windbreaker was still jammed, it somehow didn't matter anymore. A whole new world was waiting at the other end of this flight.

Lucía sat across the aisle, resting her head against the headrest, closing her eyes. For the first time in fifteen years, her hands didn't feel like they needed to hold a cleaning cloth, a bottle of chemical spray, or a handful of loose coins. They were simply her own.

Sheikh Tariq sat opposite them, opening a tablet computer to review flight telemetry, but pausing to look at mother and son.

“Are you afraid, Yasmin?” Tariq asked quietly, using her true name with natural ease.

Lucía opened her eyes, looking across the aisle at the man who had bridged her past and her future. She shook her head slowly, a serene, unbreakable peace settling over her features.

“No, Tariq,” she answered. “For a long time, I thought being invisible was the only way to keep my son safe. I thought if I stayed small, the world wouldn't notice us enough to hurt us. But today I realized... my father didn't survive everything he did just so I could hide in the corners of other people’s palaces.”

Tariq nodded approvingly. “Doctor Amin would be immensely proud of both of you.”

The jet rumbled powerfully as it aligned with the centerline of the tarmac. The engines whined into a high-pitched roar, pressing them gently back into their seats as the aircraft surged forward down the runway, faster and faster, until the ground dropped away beneath them and they punched straight up through the lead-gray clouds into the brilliant, golden light of the upper atmosphere.
