Chapter 10 - A New Morning at Pine Hill

The morning sun broke over the rooftops of Pine Hill with a brilliant, golden warmth, casting long shadows across the freshly swept steps of Pine Hill Elementary.
There were no police cruisers parked outside. There were no reporters shouting questions. There was only the cheerful chatter of children arriving for the school day, carrying brand-new backpacks, laughing, and running across the lawn.

Lily unbuckled her seatbelt instantly, grabbed her yellow polka-dot lunchbox, and hopped down onto the pavement. She looked up at the school entrance, where a brand-new banner hung over the double doors welcoming the students back to a fresh, transparent semester.
She turned around, flashing a bright, confident smile, her pink sneakers blinking in the morning light.
"Dad," she called out, walking backward toward the gate. "Are you picking me up after art class?"
I leaned against the driver’s side door of my truck, crossing my arms over my chest, feeling the cool morning breeze rustle my hair. My old work jacket was clean, but the grease stains on the cuffs were still there—a quiet badge of honor from an honest day's labor.

Lily turned and raced up the steps, her laughter blending with the voices of a hundred other children as the heavy wooden doors swung wide open, welcoming her into a bright, safe future where no one would ever dare make her feel small again.
