Chapter 4 - The Vault Beneath the Barn

The heavy padlock clicked open with a sharp, echoing snap that sounded like a gunshot in the dead silence of the sub-basement.

Dominic pulled the thick steel door back, revealing a dry, stone-lined cellar carved deep into the mountain slope. Shelves lined the walls, stacked high with gleaming glass mason jars filled with preserved peaches, pickled peppers, and thick jars of rendered lard, alongside heavy burlap sacks of white flour, coarse salt, and yellow cornmeal.

"I didn't think anyone knew about this," Dominic said, stepping inside and holding the lantern high.

"Your grandfather was a smart man," Claire said, brushing past him and running her hand along a row of dust-covered jars. "He knew that in the mountains, a man who controls the food controls the territory. These preserved fruits and grains are worth a small fortune on the open market right now, especially with the freight routes blocked."

She picked up a heavy jar of pickled wild plums, inspecting the seal. Perfect.

"Vance thinks he has us cornered," Dominic said, his voice echoing in the stone vault. "He’s been buying up our local credit notes from the bank. In three weeks, he plans to foreclose on the entire northern ridge, claiming default."

"Let him try," Claire said, setting the jar down with a sharp click. "Paper is just paper, Dominic. But right now, across that mountain, every independent rancher from here to the Canadian border is struggling to feed his hands because of the early frost and the blocked freight lines. What do you think happens if Hale Ridge suddenly becomes the central food distribution hub for the entire valley?"

Dominic stared at her, the pieces clicking together in his sharp, tactical mind. "We don't just feed our own men. We supply the other independent ranches. We break Vance’s monopoly on local provisions."

"Exactly," Claire said, stepping close to him in the narrow aisle. The lantern light cast deep shadows across his face, highlighting the hard line of his jaw. "Vance wants to starve you out? We’ll flood the valley with food. We’ll turn your ruined kitchen into a logistics empire. But to do that, I need three things: uninterrupted access to the smokehouse, absolute authority over the supply logs, and complete trust from your men."

Dominic looked down at her, his dark eyes searching her face. There was no fear in her expression, no hesitation—only the fierce, unyielding drive of a woman who had lost everything once and swore she would never lose again.

"You already have the men," Dominic said quietly. "And as for the smokehouse and the logs... consider them yours."

"Good," Claire said, turning toward the exit. "Because tonight, we’re baking three hundred loaves of sourdough bread, and Eli’s crew is going to haul the first batch of preserved rations across the ridge to the Miller family ranch before dawn."
