Chapter 10 - THE LIGHT OF A NEW DAWN

One year later.

The June sun cast a rich, golden glow across the shores of Lake Michigan. Soft waves lapped against the white sand, blending with the gentle piano music playing from a small speaker on the lawn.

Today marked the three-year anniversary of the Mercer Center, and it was also the most special day of my new life.

An intimate ceremony was held right in our backyard. There were no news cameras or strangers—only the people who had walked through the storm with me: Clara, retired Judge Arthur Vance (who now served as the honorary legal advisor for our foundation), and close colleagues from the hospital.

I stood before the full-length mirror in my bedroom, wearing a simple yet elegant cream bridal gown. I was no longer the exhausted, hollow-eyed woman who worked night shifts, consumed by paranoia and betrayal. In the mirror stood a woman full of life, confidence, and radiant peace.

There was a soft knock at the door.

"Come in," I called out.

Judge Arthur Vance stepped inside holding a small velvet box. The once-intimidating jurist now looked like a warm, proud grandfather.

"Bernice," he smiled, his aged eyes shining. "Would I have the honor of walking you down the aisle?"

"That is my fondest wish, Judge Vance," I said emotionally, stepping forward to embrace him.

"You taught us all what true courage looks like," Judge Vance held my hands gently. "The deceivers got the justice they deserved. Celina's appeal was denied last week, and Veronica will never see the light of freedom again. Those dark chapters are closed forever, Bernice. Starting today, you have only happiness ahead."

He opened the velvet box, revealing a necklace adorned with a deep blue sapphire—the color of the sky after a storm.

"This is my gift to you. Always remember that truth is like this stone: no matter how deep it is buried in the mud, once brought to the light, it shines brilliantly."

I put the necklace on, feeling an overwhelming wave of gratitude.

As we stepped out into the garden, a violin began to play a joyful melody.

Under an arch of white roses stood David. He wore a sharp navy suit, his eyes filled with devotion as he watched me approach. Beside him stood Roger in a tiny tuxedo, holding a velvet ring pillow, his face bright with innocent joy.

Judge Vance placed my hand into David's.

"Take good care of her," Judge Vance requested.

"I promise with my life," David replied, holding my hand firmly.

Before our loved ones, we exchanged our vows—not grandiose words, but a steadfast commitment to stand by, respect, and protect one another through whatever life brought us.

"By the power vested in love and resilience," the minister smiled, "I now pronounce you husband and wife."

David leaned down and kissed me under a gentle shower of rose petals. Cheers and applause erupted across the garden.

Roger ran up and threw his arms around both of us. "Dad! Mom!"

The word "Dad" left my son's lips so naturally, overflowing with happiness. Emotionally overwhelmed, David scooped Roger up into his arms, and their laughter blended with the sound of the ocean waves.

I looked at the two most important men in my life, then gazed up at the clear blue sky.

The long nightmare was finally over.

I had once believed the darkness would last forever when I saw my child lying curled up on a cold kitchen floor. But from the depths of betrayal and despair, I stood up, reclaimed the truth, fought for justice, and built a real home out of the ashes.

The sun had risen, wrapping us in its warmth. And I knew that from this day forward, my son would always sleep in safety, love, and the complete comfort of a real family.
