Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Syndicate

Six months later. Chicago.
The war was over. The Marcone family was completely dismantled, their assets seized, their leadership imprisoned or dead.
In a landmark legal move that shocked the entire American underworld, Roman Rossi stepped down as Don of the Rossi syndicate. Using his vast legal network and turning state’s evidence on foreign weapons cartels, Roman dismantled the illegal operations of his empire, transitioning the Rossi estate entirely into legitimate international shipping, real estate, and philanthropy.
The mafia Don had retired.
On a warm autumn afternoon, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was decorated with thousands of white roses, crystal chandeliers, and golden ribbons.
Over three hundred guests were present—not mobsters carrying concealed weapons, but legitimate business owners, charity organizers, and community leaders from North Chicago.
At the front of the altar stood Roman Rossi, looking impeccably handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo. Beside him stood his best man, Marco, who was now fully recovered and serving as chief of security for the Rossi Foundation.
And standing next to Roman, wearing a small black tuxedo with a white bowtie, was Leo. The boy looked healthy, bright, his dark eyes sparkling with happiness as he held a velvet ring box in his hands.
The grand organ began to play.
The heavy double doors opened, and Aaliyah walked down the aisle.
She wore a breathtaking A-line lace gown with a long, trailing veil, holding a bouquet of white peonies. She looked like royalty—a far cry from the broke, desperate girl who had walked into the Rossi mansion eighteen months ago applying for a nanny job.
As she reached the altar, Roman took her hand, his fingers trembling with deep emotion as he lifted her veil.
“You look beautiful,” Roman whispered, his eyes shining.
“You look pretty good yourself, Mr. Rossi,” she teased gently.
The minister conducted the ceremony, but when it came time for the vows, Roman turned to face Aaliyah completely, taking both of her hands in his.
“Aaliyah,” Roman said, his deep voice carrying over the silent ballroom. “I lived in darkness for three years. I believed my heart was buried in a grave, and I thought the only thing I had left to offer my son was protection through violence. Then you walked into our home. You showed me that true strength isn't found in a gun or a title—it’s found in the courage to love, to protect, and to sacrifice. You saved my son’s life, and you gave me back mine. I swear to honor you, love you, and stand as your shield for the rest of my days.”
Tears wiped down Aaliyah’s cheeks as she smiled.

Then, Leo stepped forward, handing Roman the gold band.
“My turn,” Leo announced proudly into the minister’s microphone, causing the entire audience to laugh and applaud warmly.
