Chapter 4 - The Unlikely Alliance

Forty minutes later, a non-descript black sedan pulled into the gas station parking lot. Detective Marcus Reyes stepped out, holding a large umbrella, his eyes scanning the perimeter before gesturing for us to get inside.

Reyes was a broad-shouldered man in his late forties with tired eyes and a scar across his chin. He turned the heater on full blast and handed us two dry thermal blankets from his trunk.

"Are you hurt, little girl?" Reyes asked gently, looking back at Sophie through the rear-view mirror.

Sophie looked at his face, reading his lips and his steady, calm expression. She pointed to his badge, then made the sign for Safe.

"She says you're safe," I translated, wrapping the blanket tighter around her shivering shoulders.

"She’s a perceptive kid," Reyes said, stepping on the gas and driving us away from the highway toward a safehouse in downtown San Antonio. "Now tell me everything. Start from the beginning."

For the next half-hour, I detailed the events of the evening: Sophie’s unique ability to feel vibrations and heart rhythms, the bottle of pills she had slapped away, the uneven beat of Leon's heart, and Hector’s confession in the dark.

Reyes listened in silence, his hands gripping the steering wheel tight.

"Hector Vance," Reyes murmured softly. "We always thought Hector was the quiet accountant behind the scenes. If he’s executing a coup inside the Montenegro syndicate, he’s not just taking over the local operation—he’s securing control of over two hundred million dollars in hidden assets across South Texas."

"He killed Leon," I said softly, tears finally burning my eyes. "He was going to kill my daughter."

"Leon isn't dead," Reyes corrected me quietly, looking back at me.

I froze. "What?"

"My informants inside the estate reported twenty minutes ago that an ambulance was called to the mansion under high security," Reyes revealed. "Leon Montenegro was rushed to the private intensive care unit at St. Luke's Hospital. He’s in a coma, surrounded by Hector’s private security guards."

I looked at Sophie. She was staring at her hands in her lap, tapping her fingers in that same uneven pattern.

Two. Three. Two.

"He's still alive because of her," I realized softly. "He didn't take the full dose tonight because she knocked the bottle away."
