Chapter 4 - The Matriarch's Fury

The door to my apartment didn't just open; it was practically shoved wide as Eleanor Hartwell swept into the room like a whirlwind of expensive mink, pearls, and sharp venom.

At sixty-two, Eleanor was the undisputed queen of Chicago’s high-society elite. She had spent decades preserving the Hartwell family name with an iron fist. Beside her stood two junior attorneys from Hartwell Global’s secondary legal team, looking nervous and out of breath.

"Julian!" Eleanor snapped, her sharp gaze sweeping over the small living room with deep disgust before landing on her son. "What in God's name are you doing here?! The board is in absolute chaos! The stocks dropped three percent in afternoon trading because you walked out of the merger meeting! And the press is reporting that your estranged wife showed up with a—"

She stopped mid-sentence as her eyes fell upon the white crib in the corner, and then upon me.

"Clara," Eleanor sneered, her voice dripping with aristocratic condescension. "I see you've resorted to theatrical stunts to bypass your prenuptial agreement. Showing up at a corporate meeting with a child? Do you really think a paternity scam is going to extract millions from my family?"

A cold, dangerous silence settled over the room.

Before I could even open my mouth to defend myself, Julian stepped directly into his mother's path, blocking her view of both me and the crib. The sheer aura of dark, lethal rage radiating from him made Eleanor take a hesitant step backward.

"Mother," Julian said, his voice eerily quiet. "If you utter one more disrespectful word toward my wife or my daughter, I will have security throw you out of this building myself."

Eleanor’s eyes widened in genuine shock. "Julian! How dare you speak to me like that! I am your mother!"

"And Clara is my wife! And that baby in that crib is Rose Hartwell—my legitimate daughter and the sole heir to everything I own!" Julian roared, his voice echoing off the apartment walls with such force that the two junior attorneys shrank back into the hallway.

Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace. "A... a daughter? Julian, you can't be serious! You haven't seen this woman in ten months! How do you even know it's yours?! She could have—"

"She looks exactly like me, Mother," Julian cut her off, stepping so close to Eleanor that she had to tilt her head back to look at him. "And unlike you, Clara has an ounce of integrity. She didn't ask for a single cent of my money. She raised my child alone for five months because your favored legal team blocked her calls and threatened her with lawsuits when she was pregnant!"

Eleanor’s face flushed a deep, embarrassed red. "The legal team was protecting the family assets during a sensitive restructuring! We didn't know—"

"You didn't care!" Julian shouted. "You never liked Clara because she didn't come from your stupid, superficial country-club social circle! You spent three years making her feel inferior in my own home, and I was too damn blind and obsessed with work to put a stop to it!"

Julian turned to the two terrified junior attorneys standing in the doorway.

"You two," Julian commanded. "Go back to the office. Tell the board that the merger with Apex Holdings is indefinitely postponed. Tell them that if anyone has a problem with my personal priorities, they can submit their resignation to my desk by eight o'clock tomorrow morning."

"Julian, no!" Eleanor pleaded, panic finally cracking her aristocratic facade. "Postponing the merger will cost us forty million dollars!"

"I don't give a damn about forty million dollars, Mother!" Julian snapped.

He walked over to the closet near the door, grabbed Eleanor’s designer coat, and held it out to her.

"You are going to leave this apartment right now," Julian said, his grey eyes cold as glacier ice. "You are going to return to Lincoln Park. And you will not come near my wife, my daughter, or me until you are ready to deliver a sincere, humble apology to Clara on your knees."

"Julian... you are choosing her over your own family?!" Eleanor choked out, her voice trembling with rage and disbelief.

"Clara and Rose are my family," Julian stated with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "You are currently just a guest who has overstayed her welcome. Get out."

Eleanor stared at her son, realizing for the first time in her life that her control over him was completely, irrevocably broken. She snatched her coat from his hands, gave me one final look of pure, concentrated hatred, and stormed out of the apartment, her heels clicking furiously down the hallway.

Julian closed the door, locking it firmly behind her.

The silence returned to the room, heavy and charged with emotion. Julian leaned his back against the closed door, closing his eyes, his shoulders slumping as he let out a long, exhausted sigh.

I stood by the kitchen island, staring at him in complete disbelief. I had spent three years watching Julian defer to his mother’s high-society standards, watching him stay silent while she made passive-aggressive comments about my background.

Seeing him completely sever ties with her to protect Rose and me left me utterly speechless.

Julian opened his eyes and looked across the room at me.

"I should have done that three years ago, Clara," he said softly, his voice full of genuine regret. "I'm sorry it took me so long to grow a spine."

I took a slow breath, looking down at my hands, then back at him. "Julian... you just torpedoed a forty-million-dollar deal and publicly humiliated your mother."

"Good," Julian said, walking slowly back toward me. "It's a start."
