Chapter 6 - THE WAR OF SHADOWS

The news of my separation from Evelyn Shaw Moretti exploded across Chicago’s financial and social circles like a detonation.
Within forty-eight hours, the Shaw family launched a media blitz. Anonymous articles appeared in local publications claiming I was suffering a psychological breakdown, alleging that I had abandoned my high-society wife after becoming obsessed with my ex-wife.
At the same time, Evelyn’s lawyers filed a petition in Cook County Court demanding temporary control of Moretti Enterprises’ liquid assets, citing marital distress and financial recklessness.
They thought I would hide. They thought the threat of public scandal would force me into a quiet settlement, as it had with dozens of other high-profile executives in Chicago.
They severely underestimated how little I cared about my reputation.
On Monday morning, I called an emergency press conference at the Drake Hotel. Over fifty journalists, news crews, and financial analysts packed into the grand ballroom.
I stood at the podium in a simple black suit. Beside me stood Marcus and our legal team, along with a stack of verified financial ledgers, offshore banking records, and sworn affidavits from medical whistleblowers at St. Jude Women’s Clinic.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice amplified clearly across the room. "I have called this conference today to address the recent false narratives surrounding my personal life and my firm."
I didn't use corporate euphemisms. I didn't hide behind legal jargon.
For thirty minutes, I laid out the entire truth. I revealed the $450,000 wire transfer from Eleanor Shaw to Dr. Arthur Vance. I displayed the forged medical records that had been used to tear my first marriage apart. I named every individual involved—Dr. Vance, Eleanor Shaw, Evelyn Shaw, and the corrupt administrators who had facilitated the fraud.
The room erupted into chaos. Flashbulbs went off in a blinding flurry. Reporters screamed questions, standing on their chairs.
"Mr. Moretti!" a senior journalist from the Chicago Tribune shouted. "Are you pressing criminal charges against your current wife's family?!"
"The State’s Attorney's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have already been handed these documents," I replied coldly into the microphone. "Warrants have been issued as of 9:00 AM this morning."
I paused, looking directly into the primary news camera lens, knowing Evelyn and her mother were watching from their estate in Gold Coast.
"Five years ago," I said, my voice steady and iron-firm, "I allowed arrogant people to dictate my choices. I allowed lies to destroy an innocent woman. I cannot undo the past, but I will ensure that those who trade in human suffering pay every cent of their debt to justice."
By noon, the fallout was catastrophic for the Shaw family.
Federal agents raided Dr. Vance’s private clinic, seizing hard drives and personal records. Dr. Vance was arrested at O’Hare Airport attempting to board a flight to Switzerland. Facing federal wire fraud and medical malpractice charges, Vance broke within hours, signing a full confession that implicated Eleanor and Evelyn Shaw in a decade-long scheme of manipulating high-net-worth fertility patients.
Eleanor Shaw was taken into custody at her Gold Coast home before sunset. Evelyn, stripped of her social standing and facing civil asset forfeiture, fled to her family's estate in Europe, her legal representation abandoning her as the criminal indictments mounted.
I stood in my private office at Moretti Tower that evening, watching the TV news broadcast showing Dr. Vance in handcuffs being led into the federal courthouse.
"It’s done, sir," Marcus said, stepping into the room. "The Shaw family is ruined. Your name has been cleared of any financial misconduct, though the social press is going wild over the romance drama."
"I don't care about the press, Marcus," I said, staring out at the snow falling over the city. "How is Natalie?"
Marcus hesitated. "Reporters tried to locate her house in Evanston this afternoon after her name was mentioned in the court filings."
I turned around instantly, my eyes wide with concern. "What?!"
May you like
"Don't worry, sir," Marcus added quickly. "Our security detail intercepted them two blocks away. We’ve placed a full security cordon around her street. No journalists or cameras are getting anywhere near her or the babies."
"I’m going there," I said, grabbing my coat. "She must be terrified."
