Chapter 8 - The Collapsing Alliance

While my new empire was rising from the ashes, the alliance between Daniel Caldwell and Vanessa Price was fracturing into jagged, toxic pieces in the Franklin County holding facility.
In the small, sterile visitation booth separated by a thick pane of scratched safety glass, Daniel sat in his orange jumpsuit, glaring across the room with eyes hollowed out by sleeplessness and incandescent rage.
Sitting on the other side of the glass was Vanessa. Her designer trench coat was gone, replaced by standard prison blues. Her hair was greasy, her makeup completely stripped away, revealing a face hardened by panic and desperation.
“This is all your fault!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice muffled slightly by the glass speaker box. “If you hadn't been so arrogant—if you had just managed your ex-wife properly instead of letting her sniff around your corporate ledgers—we wouldn't be sitting in this hellhole!”
“My fault?!” Daniel yelled back, slamming his fist against the metal table so hard the entire partition vibrated. “I built this entire operation! You’re the one who convinced your ex-con father to set up those offshore accounts in the Caymans! You’re the one who told me to forge the signatures on the property transfers!”
“My father warned me you were a weak, cowardly amateur!” Vanessa spat back, venom dripping from her lips. “He said the second federal investigators knocked on your door, you’d fold like a cheap tent! And he was right! Look at us! I’m facing four years because of your sloppy record-keeping!”
“Try eight years, Vanessa,” a calm, smooth voice echoed from behind Daniel.
Both of them snapped their heads around. Standing in the doorway of the visitation booth, flanked by two federal marshals, was Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Vance. He held a crisp manila folder tucked neatly under his arm.
“Mr. Caldwell, Ms. Price,” the prosecutor greeted them with chilling politeness. “I thought you both might like an advance copy of the updated federal indictment being filed this morning.”
Daniel swallowed hard, his throat dry. “What... what are you talking about?”
“We’ve completed our interviews with your former administrative staff and the travel agency in Kentucky,” Thomas Vance said, opening the folder. “We now have sworn testimony proving that Ms. Price attempted to liquidate secondary corporate real estate assets under a fraudulent power of attorney while actively fleeing the jurisdiction. That elevates the charges from standard wire fraud to interstate racketeering and flight from prosecution.”
Vanessa went completely white. She gripped the edge of the metal table, her fingernails scraping desperately against the surface. “No... no, you can't do that. I want a deal. I’ll testify against him! I have all the emails! I have the audio recordings of him planning the asset concealment!”
Daniel stared at Vanessa, his mouth hanging open in sheer disbelief. “You... you treacherous bitch. You were recording me?”
“I had to protect myself from an idiot!” Vanessa screamed, bursting into hysterical tears.
The federal prosecutor closed the folder with a sharp clack.

“Your cooperation, Ms. Price, will be duly noted by the sentencing judge,” Thomas Vance said dryly, turning toward the door. “However, given that you tried to skip the country with two million dollars in bearer bonds, I wouldn't expect much leniency. Enjoy your lunch, Mr. Caldwell.”
As the heavy metal door slammed shut behind the prosecutor, Daniel slumped forward in his chair, his head resting against the glass partition. The silence between them was heavier than any shout. The golden future they had dreamed of—built on lies, stolen money, and the destruction of an innocent family—had completely evaporated into a cold, concrete cage.
