Chapter 7 - Healing the Silence

Three months later, the scandal had faded from the front pages, replaced by new corporate mergers and political gossip. But inside the Hawthorne estate, life had undergone a quiet, profound revolution.
The heavy, oppressive silence that once haunted the mansion was gone, replaced by the chaotic, beautiful sounds of a real home.
In the sunlit conservatory, surrounded by towering potted ferns and orchids, little Olivia—now dressing in bright, colorful toddler dresses instead of miniature tuxedos—was giggling uncontrollably as she chased a golden retriever puppy across the Persian rug.
Elena sat at a wrought-iron patio table, sketching in a notebook while keeping a watchful, loving eye on her daughter. The dark circles under her eyes were gone; her skin glowed with health and happiness, and her laughter rang out clear and musical whenever Olivia tripped over her own feet.
Ethan walked out through the French doors, carrying a tray with two cups of freshly brewed coffee and a plate of sliced fruit. He wore a casual linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking more relaxed than he had in a decade.
He set the tray down on the table and slid into the chair opposite Elena, handing her a cup.
"Thank you," Elena smiled, taking a sip and looking up at him with those deep, expressive brown eyes. "You know, you spoil us. I’m supposed to be managing the estate staff, yet I feel more like a guest here than an employee."
"You're not an employee, Elena, and you never were," Ethan said softly, his gaze lingering on her face with a warmth that went far beyond professional courtesy. "You’re the heart of this house. Without you, it was just an empty monument of stone and glass."
Elena’s cheeks flushed a soft pink. She looked down at her coffee cup, a gentle smile playing on her lips. "I still can’t believe how fast everything changed. Six months ago, I thought I had lost her forever. And now... she’s talking up a storm."
It was true. Ever since that fateful night at the engagement party when Olivia had first spoken her name, the dam had broken. The toddler now chattered constantly, naming colors, asking endless questions, and filling every corner of the mansion with her bright, cheerful voice.
"She has her mother’s intelligence," Ethan noted with a warm smile. "And stubbornness."
"Oh, definitely her father’s stubbornness," Elena countered playfully, raising an eyebrow. "Have you tried convincing her to eat her broccoli lately?"
Ethan laughed—a deep, resonant sound that echoed against the glass conservatory walls. He reached across the table, his hand gently covering hers. The casual touch sent a sudden, electric spark through both of them, lingering in the quiet space between their breathing.
"Speaking of stubbornness," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a lower, more serious register. "There’s something I’ve been meaning to discuss with you."
Elena looked up, sensing the shift in his tone. "What is it, Ethan?"
"My legal team finally finalized the complete dissolution of the fraudulent adoption decree," Ethan said, his dark eyes fixed entirely on hers. "Legally and biologically, Olivia’s records have been fully corrected. But..." He paused, taking a slow breath. "My name is still listed on her birth certificate as her legal guardian. And frankly, I don't ever intend to change that."
Elena’s breath hitched. She stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Ethan..."
"I don't want to just be her guardian, Elena," Ethan said, his voice steady, earnest, and filled with a profound vulnerability that he had never shown anyone else in his life. "And I certainly don't want to be your employer. From the day she walked across that ballroom floor and pointed at you, my entire world turned right-side up. I fell in love with a little girl who gave me my first reason to truly listen, and I fell in love with the extraordinary woman who raised her."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box—not an engagement ring meant for show, not a diamond bought to impress investors, but a delicate platinum band inlaid with a single, brilliant sapphire that matched the exact shade of Elena’s eyes.
"Will you stay in this house not as a guest, not as staff, but as my wife?" Ethan asked quietly. "Will you and Olivia make this house a real home with me?"
May you like
Elena’s eyes welled with happy tears. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Yes, Ethan. A thousand times, yes."
