Chapter 5 - Cracks in the Golden Shell

By Wednesday afternoon, the narrative surrounding the Sterling family had completely shattered.

At first, Madison had tried to launch a social media smear campaign, posting dramatic videos of herself weeping in her wedding dress, claiming her "jealous elder sister" had ruined her special day out of spite. But internet sympathy is a double-edged sword.

Within six hours of her video going viral, several guests who had attended the reception uploaded their own unedited smartphone videos to TikTok and Instagram.

The footage was brutal and undeniable.

Clear, high-definition video showed Dad proudly announcing my car as a gift, me calmly saying "no," and Madison lunging forward, tearing my hair, and violently throwing me onto the polished ballroom floor while my parents stood by and blamed me.

The internet responded with thunderous fury.

“She assaulted her sister over a car she didn’t even buy?!” “Look at the dad pointing at the victim on the floor!” “The new husband just standing there like a coward!”

By Wednesday evening, Madison’s video had been taken down after receiving over two million hate comments. But the damage didn't stop online.

Trevor’s parents, prominent figures in local real estate, issued a swift, public statement distancing their family from the Sterling family's business dealings. They demanded an immediate annulment of Trevor and Madison’s marriage unless Madison publicly apologized and resolved her legal liabilities.

My office phone rang at 4:00 PM. It was Trevor.

"Claire?" his voice was hesitant, quiet, and stripped of all the arrogance he had displayed at the head table.

"Trevor," I said coldly. "You shouldn't be calling me. My lawyer sent a notice to your family's estate."

"I know... I know," Trevor sighed heavily. "I’m calling from my car. I left the house this morning. Claire, I swear to God I had no idea your dad didn't buy that car. Madison told me weeks ago that your dad was buying her an E-Class as a wedding surprise."

"They lied to you, Trevor. Just like they lie to everyone else to maintain their fake prestige."

"I saw what she did to you on the floor," Trevor swallowed hard. "I was in shock. But seeing the video back... it’s sick, Claire. My parents are forcing me to file for an annulment. She spent the entire morning screaming at her father because he couldn't buy her a luxury condo. She doesn't love me, Claire. She just wanted the wedding."

"That’s a realization you should have had before you put a ring on her finger, Trevor," I said without sympathy. "Do what you have to do to protect yourself. Because I am not holding back."

"I understand," Trevor whispered. "I'm sorry. I really am."

He hung up.

I looked out my office window at the Manhattan skyline. The first phase of my forecast was complete. Madison’s fake fairy tale had collapsed in less than seventy-two hours. But my father’s empire was still waiting for the final blade to fall.
